We needed to be introducing our future slowly throughout the last 15 years or so.How often does England or the US national teams expose their reputation for a friendly?
They build their teams slowly and quietly.
The Matildas are a huge brand in this country and every game exposes them, so results are paramount.
We didn't do that - choosing to stick with what had worked even when it was fading, and not providing for any form of succession.
It is too late to go softly softly if we want a team that can do well in 2027.
Tony Gustavsson perpetuated the same same game for us.How much time and patience was Tony Gustafson given? The media and pundits were on his back relentlessly, he took us to the Semi finals at the World Cup but as soon as a less than expected performance at the Olympics was achieved he was rubbish according to the ‘so called’ experts.
I hope Montemurro is given a better chance but somehow I doubt it.
He got plenty of time to do something and he didn't actually fail at rebuilding and future proofing - he just did not try as far as I am concerned.
I don't care about results if we show progress and promise - same as for the Roar as I have said many times. I would gladly sacrifice our ranking (which we deserve to lose based on our deteriorating play over years) in order to find and build a squad worth carrying into the future.
I know that some will never see the world that way and I am not trying to convince you to change your perspective. Results and rankings are how many judge a team at any level.
Reality to me says we have let our standards drop too far and we deserve to have a lower ranking. As a country though we have much better football in us and we deserve to play that way and go higher in the rankings. One step at a time is fine for me - rebuild with a keen eye and an open mind first then push on closer to where we should be.
As long as Montemurro is given the authority to do what he sees our need to be (and that is no small thing) I believe we will be better for it.
