The Orange Army. (Brisbane Roar Official Thread)

Full time 4-0 to Persiaj Jakarta.

The best I can say on our second half performance is we look more lively and likely for something to happen when Lauton is on.

So much we were unable to do well, and Persija playing much better.

dr. bellows - we were pretty much in the dark the whole game and I am inclined to tuck the cautious optimism well away for now.

That was quite depressing.

The pitch looked to fall apart as the game went on, but that had nothing to do with our inability to combine, create pressure and chances, and simply defend.

Good info. Thanks but yikes! Concerning but a trial match so not panicking yet. Do you know if we're still shopping? I was trying to work out how Valkanis will set-up. Maybe a mid-block with these players. I can't see a high line with Aldred in a back 4. And I'm not sure about Postolachi in a low block, although definitely not ruling that out. But I just don't think Valkanis will consider a low block. King is probably better sitting deeper because I don't remember him being that quick, more average pace. A mid-block would be ok for him, and no problem for Tate. Aldred would still be somewhat exposed for pace in a mid-block but if Bouzanis comes out further he can intercept balls in behind. With quick turnovers he could get lobbed but Stajic would have to be alive to the risk of that. Bouzanis could still play out from the back. I'm guessing the starting 6 and 10 would be Stajic and Nam respectively but it seems like Lauton put his hand up. Maybe he and Francois fight it out for the starting 8 role? Forward line I'm not sure but possibly Ilic, Postolachi and Ngor? I think Ilic is a left-footed crosser so maybe looking for the head of Postolachi who could make late runs into the box from not too deep. Ngor also left-footed but more likely to cut in I think? That could work if Tate makes overlapping runs to provide a crossing option. King more likely to sit and 2 crossers up there might kill rather than create chances anyway. Interesting days ahead.

It was a trial match as you say - and there was no sign of Dimi Valkanis; who we know is better than Bility but was over there with the team. He must have played in the first game.

There is every chance that 2 months out of season Valkanis is still trying things out and playing around with ideas - but to go to Indonesia to muck around can't do the squads confidence any good.

We just weren't sharp or effective really anywhere on the pitch - and not close to aleague level in our onfield presence.

I have not ruled out Valkanis playing a back 3/5 so seeing just Aldred and Bility at the back was unexpected. Nasso is not an imposing figure at left fullback and for Persija's goal up the middle Aldred looked to be suggesting that Nasso was meant to come inside when Bility pushed forward. It is not entirely out of Aldred's playbook to blame others unfairly but a fullback has to cover if the centreback goes forward. That's another learning experience for Nasso anyway.

From your thinking, I don't think Stajic can be used to back up from quick turnovers because he works wherever he is needed right up to halfway frequently. He and Maeroni rotate anywhere through a normal DM position and central/attacking midfielder but you can't say that one or the other was always back in the DM position.

Vidic and Lauton both looked keen enough to do some good, but Vidic missed a tricky but decent chance he put just wide of the left post when he had little time to react. Keeper was basically beaten had it been on goal and he will get some of those in; but in games of few chances other team's forwards would have scored it.

Ilic seemed awfully consistent cutting inside from left forward/wing just about every time last night. Did not mix it up to have the defenders in doubt. One thing in Persija's favour is that their players are quick on their feet and react well to their opponent's moves. Ilic cut in too soon at times - perhaps to avoid losing the ball in a close contest - but doing it early allowed the defence to close him down comfortably. He did not look dangerous.

Lauton is lively and makes runs through the last defensive line. We don't see his runs or make the passes that would make him dangerous. I think he plays a better attacking midfield role than 'just' a central midfield role.

All up we seem to have players who don't excel at their specific position but play a more fluid role around that area. Great if the parts exceed the whole but we are well short of that at this stage.

I hope we are still shopping for a solid defender.

We shipped 4 goals in the Cup game against SFC, and 4 goals both games in Indonesia.

Whether we play a low, mid or high block we have weaknesses in each that make goals scored against us look far too easy.

Aldred's pace is a liability on mid and high defensive lines. The decision making and reaction of our defensive group in a low defensive line is flawed. Bility does stupid things when players get past him.

We might yet be facing a season where we go in green and concede simple looking goals while we learn our roles. We can't practice against aleague equivalent opponents enough to learn quicker and you can't develop a resilient defensive structure playing only against lower tiered clubs and your own team mates.

Ngor did surprisingly poorly up the right wing. We had an overall inclination to pass backwards or hold the ball up when we went forward down the wings. I hope it was a deliberate strategy to maintain possession and not signs of a lack of confidence in our ability to get in behind.

Judging by the shirts sticking to bodies right from the start the conditions were hard for us. Cannot rule out the simplest cause of lacklustre play being humidity and heat drain. You can't do anything about that other than struggle.

Bottom line is we are not a cohesive, well drilled team. Until that starts to develop we can only guess where Valkanis has us heading.

More good info. Thanks. I wasn't really sure what to expect from the forwards so that info is both a little surprising and disappointing. I agree Lauton is best at AM and by the sounds of it you think he outshone Nam, which could be good or bad depending on how you look at it.

Nam and Lauton are two entirely different beasts.

I would not consider replacing Nam with Lauton. Nam's vision and execution are what we need up front to create for the other forwards.

Lauton is a more inventive and enthusiastic striker than Vidic when it comes down to it. He is not a holding striker though and would be physically pushed out of contests if he was playing as a target man.

I wanted to see us putting decent balls in to Postolachi to see how good he is at making that final bit of space and shooting. He rarely got a look in. Less about him and more about our build up play.

I have done our team a disservice in not stressing that Persija defended their own half most of the game. Whenever we tried to go forward we had 5 defensive players set and a compact second line of defence in front of them. Nimble and quick enough to get to any loose player of ours.

They played a lot like we did last season - sitting back when they did not have the ball and not being drawn out.

In a preseason game we could have also sat back and not engaged - like we might in a competition game that mattered - but that would be a waste of a training game for us. So perhaps we pushed and pulled more than we would in a 'real' game and left ourselves exposed because of it.

Coming home with two nil all draws (if we could have achieved that) might have given us a sense of resilience but it would have been a waste of time not to try to break them down and learn some lessons when we had the chance.

Offensively I do not see Persija causing in form aleague clubs much trouble but they were resilient and organised defensively and made it hard for us to construct much in the final third.

Brisbane Roar Welcome Home Natalie Tathem

Brisbane Roar FC is happy to announce to you first the signing of defender Natalie Tathem for the 2026/27 Ninja A-League Women's season, marking a return to the Club where her A-League Women's career began.

The Brisbane-born Tathem returns to the Roar after stints at Melbourne Victory and Perth Glory, bringing more than 55 A-League Women's appearances and a Championship-winning season with Victory in 2020/21. Comfortable across the backline and midfield, Tathem also spent time playing in England with Salford City Lionesses before her most recent two-year deal at Perth Glory.

Her return sees a Brisbane local and Club-produced talent back where it started.

Head Coach Johnathan Clemente said, “Nat is yet another experienced leader to join the club, she has fantastic pedigree in this league and is a championship winner who can play anywhere in the defensive or midfield, most importantly she is a Brisbane local and understands what it takes to represent our club and city.”

Speaking on returning, Tathem said, “It feels incredibly special to be returning to Brisbane Roar, the club where my professional career began. After spending the last four seasons away from home playing in Melbourne, England and Perth, it feels like a real full-circle moment to return to my home club. Brisbane Roar has such a proud history and strong winning culture which makes me to pull on the Roar jersey again.

“I hope to bring home the experience I’ve gained over the past four years and contribute to the team’s success this season.”

Brisbane Roar FC welcomes Natalie back to the Club she once called home and looks forward to seeing her make an impact in orange throughout the 2026/27 season.

Roar Sign Championship-Winning Defender Annabel Martin

Brisbane Roar have added significant finals experience to their backline for the 2026/27 season, confirming the signing of defender Annabel Martin.

Martin arrives at Roar Park having won the 2024/25 A-League Women Championship with Central Coast Mariners and brings more than 100 A-League Women appearances to the club. She began her career as a 16-year-old at Melbourne Victory, before spells at Newcastle Jets and Wellington Phoenix, and three seasons at the Mariners.

Head Coach Johnathan Clemente said Martin's leadership and finals pedigree would strengthen the squad heading into the new campaign.

"Annabel's record in the league speaks for itself, Premiership & Championship winner with over 100 appearances. Experienced leader and defender with quality at both ends of the field, I know she'll run through brick walls to be successful and can't wait to see her do it in Brisbane."

Martin said she was looking forward to linking up with her new teammates.
"I am super excited to be a part of the Brisbane Roar family. This club has such a great history, and I look forward to getting straight to work with Johno and the girls to bring home more silverware.

"I can't wait for the season to start and to be playing in front of all the passionate fans, competing and giving it my all. Playing away in Brisbane was never easy, so I'm glad to be on the same side now."

IMO the season went out the window as soon as Valkanis slotted Aldred back into the team. If that is best the coach can do, then we are screwed. Keeping Valkanis was the first white flag mistake; Aldred was the second. This is a club with zero ambition.
I'm seeing a spoon on the horizon and it's not made of silver.

There are now two questions:
How much rope does Valkanis have left?
and
Does this club have any capacity to reinvent itself as anything other than just making up the numbers?

Actually, there is a third question: how low can the average attendance fall for this club?

For those of us who were there through the Roarcalona years, this is surreal - that the club could have fallen to this.

I used to think that things could be turned around, but the club is now so damaged that a demolition and rebuild with different owners may be the only valid option very soon.

Agree. Signing Aldred again, who's nearly 36 and was poor in his last season at Brisbane two years ago, illustrates the lack of ambition, lack of money to spend, and lack of character/charisma that the club has.

Aldred was too slow when he left.

But is it not possible that he has improved his speed and fitness playing in the Indian Super League? He was part of a cup winning side with both the ISL Shield and ISL Cup whatever that means.

We desperately needed a presence and experience at the back - our young central defenders just don't play as a unit and they need someone to bring them into a common space.

I will wait until I see the team functioning better around him before I'll write him off.

For the rest of the team, I say that Bouzanis, Tate, Valkanis, King, Stajic and Nam are good aleague quality. Maieroni and Lauton are proven at this level. We have yet to see what Postolachi brings, but Shaw and Nasso have shown some promise when they have been given a chance. Nasso to me is a winger not a fullback so I hope he plays further forward.

Ilic has yet to prove himself in my eyes. I sort of think that Germany knows football, so him playing in the third division is not German football missing a gem. He is a team player in a disorganised team at this stage so I have not seen what he can bring.

We know Vidic is wasteful but he can score goals if only by dint of sheer persistence.

Among that lot we have a decent team with some potential.

We have till late October to get better as a team - and quite frankly we could not be playing much worse out of the gate.

Give it a month and see how we are shaping up is my decision. Too soon yet based on the disjointed early showings.

Edit: I would also see Ngor playing in a structured team before I would write him off. He has promise and he does look around for options. We need to provide options and that is part of us learning to play as a team.

Aldred increasing speed? No. An absolute impossibility at his age. His all round physical capacity will have declined. The science is rock solid.

He used to look a heavier build but seems slimmer to me now.

I know you have to work harder at training as your muscle fibres (or whatever they are called) diminish with age and you have to compensate by strengthening the ones you have left as much as possible.

But I do not believe Aldred was at his best when he left us - so it is conceivable that he had more speed to draw on had he been in better shape then.

The science is rock solid if he was at his best before. I don't think he was.

He was battling hamstring injuries during his last year or so at Brisbane, which explains the physical drop-off we saw during that period.

He seems to have gotten over those issues during his time in India, given his availability and performance levels from all reports. There’s no reason he can’t get back to a more acceptable physical condition, even factoring in a small drop-off from his "peak" due to age. Being 35 in 2026 is not the same as being 35 in 1976. However like all signings there is a risk and it is clearly this for Aldred.

The reality is that his signing depends on what they do with the last visa spot over the next fortnight. We need another CB given we have four, including Parkins, and if that final visa spot is used on a CB, then he’d be a good number three option who provides leadership and experienced cover.

If we use that visa elsewhere and instead bring in another academy CB or someone from the NPL to provide further cover, then it’s obviously more of a risk. The question then becomes whether there’s another area of the squad that needs strengthening more than it’s worth taking that risk. Only bringing in a keeper to replacing Bouzanis would make any sense if that was the case and i think that's unlikely.

American Forward Murphy Agnew Returns to A-League with Brisbane Roar

Brisbane Roar FC is excited to announce to you first that we have signed American forward Murphy Agnew for the 2026/27 Ninja A-League Women's season, adding a proven goal scorer with recent UEFA Champions League experience to the club's front line.

Agnew, 27, returns to Australian football after two seasons in the A-League Women with Newcastle Jets in 2022/23. Since leaving Australia she has built a strong record in Europe, first with Scottish champions Celtic and most recently with Strasbourg in the French Première Ligue.

At Celtic, Agnew was part of the side that won the 2023/24 SWPL 1 title and in total notched up 33 goal contributions across 66 appearances during her time at the club. She also featured in Celtic's run to the UEFA Women's Champions League qualifying rounds, scoring the winning goal against Ukrainian side Vorskla Poltava in September 2024.

A Pennsylvania native, Agnew began her senior career at Harvard University before moving into professional football with Þróttur Reykjavík in Iceland in 2022.

Speaking on committing to the Roar, Murphy Agnew said, "I'm really looking forward to be back playing in Australia and I'm excited to be a part of this team. This club has a fantastic fanbase and I can't wait to be playing for the Roar in front of all the incredible fans.”

A-League Women Head Coach Johnathan Clemente said Agnew's experience in Europe made her a valuable addition to the squad.

"Murphy's experience in Europe speaks for itself, she brings goals, assists, pace, and flexibility across our front line and has proven that in the UEFA Champions League. I'm excited to see what she can do back in Australia," Clemente said.

Fair points, but I still don't see him as possibly being anything but slower. Time is relentess.
