This very thread is for dual-nationals. That, in essence, is people with an entitlement to have another nationality.

I get the feeling of disappointment from those who value the national team above their clubs for some reason but its going a little far to call these young Aussie boys "traitors to the country" or "non -Australian" .. Doing so is EXACTLY the same as saying it to me or my children and thus I take exception.

Exactly, his (Segecic's) passport is still Australian, his country of birth still listed as Australia, and hes an Australian Citizen (ditto both his parents). Hes Australian, still, just hes chosen to play for the country of his grandparents. Which i guess makes it all the more frustrating.

You're taking it out of context. On a football forum we don't need to hear about them because this is an Australian football forum where we talk about Aussies who play for the national team

I care about the likes of Aamir Abdallah, Mitch Baker, Angie Beard, Jake Brimmer, Bianca Gittany, Charles M'Bombwa, Stacey Pap, Josh Sotirio, South Sudan, etc living their dreams after being unable to make our squad.

I don’t care about the ones who rejected us when we needed them most after using the Australian development system. I want our development spots going to Aussies and if not Aussies then players from ASEAN or Oceania. Let Europe develop their own players, we need to strengthen our own player pool.

Ok, I’ll bite. That’s a very long bow to draw there. Were you or your children selected for Greece and chose to play for Greece? I don’t think so.
I don’t agree with HSF’s choice of words that these players are “non-Australian”, perhaps “ungrateful Australians” might be a better choice given that the player’s family live in Australia(I assume?) and he was born, grew up, and developed and learned his football in Australia?

Mate you cant call someone non-Australian based on YOUR expectations of what that means and expect it not to come across as at least slightly racist.

We live in a relatively tolerant country where we are all free to pray to whichever god we chose, speak whichever language we choose and teach our kids to value whatever it is we value based on the fundamental laws of the land and showing respect to our fellow Australians.

Choosing one arbitrary country over another in soccer does NOT make you patriotic, just perhaps not good enough to represent a better country.

Why would I be considered a traitor to countries on the other side of the planet I’ve merely visited a few times? I feel most connected to Australia because I was born here and raised here, as were both of my parents. My homeland is Australia.

I didn’t say they weren’t Australians, I said they weren’t Australian under FIFA eligibility rules. As citizens they deserve equal treatment but I do question whether they should continue living here if they refuse to believe they belong to this country.

So:

• Lyndon Dykes (who’s washed by the way) has two Scottish parents but he himself was born here, though he never played higher than Gold Coast NPL teams until he went to Scotland.
• Nektarios Triantis’ dad (who died when Nektar was eight) was born in Greece but went to high school in Sydney. Nektar himself was born here.
• Adrian Segečić’s grandparents are from Croatia while he and his parents were born here. That puts him in the 50% of the population that has both parents born in Australia, making him “more Australian” in some sense than half the country.

It’s not even like Christian Viera who was actually born in Italy, these guys genuinely are born and bred Aussies that chose to not play for the country that gave them everything.

I meant as foreign players in our academies. Why should we help develop a foreigner who got rejected when there’s better academies on their side of the world?

I'm pretty sure that one of the FIFA requirements is citizenship. They have a few more restrictions depending on the type of citizenship and ancestry. However if the country you want to play for doesn't recognise you as a citizen then you can't play for them no matter your ancestry.

This thread is for Australiam dual nationals guys like Triantis and Segecic are wholly relevant to the topic of the thread, and frankly i find it interesting to hear about their progress, even if they have selected other countries. I find it a 'what might have been' situation.

Yeah nah I explained the context that I called them non Australian which is a football context they aren't. I don't care about them personally but obviously they are Australian.
