Not really, 16,000 seems like a reasonable figure. The men’s game still got more than double that.

I think the truth is people just like women’s sports now, and so they should. Matildas and Women’s Origin games get good crowds and audiences (which are only getting better) and the Australia vs Ireland AFLW game was a success. I would love for the Dub to capitalise on this more; even if the attention will never be as high as the Tillies I’m sure it can be higher than it is now.

The crowds correlate with which sports young girls play. Rugby League has become so much more popular. When I was a kid girls had to play on the boy's team.

Football again has missed the boat. The W League is just park football and not eventy enough while the other codes have some glitz and better marketing to get people in.

They did something like that in Canberra once - was an A-League game here with a double header of Canberra United semi final. Due to the weather, they moved the Canberra United game after the men’s, and it ended up having the higher attendance

At what point do they hit the button for attendance? The early game gets a few keen ones and then everyone else streams in and they tally it at HT? FT?

I remember as a kid at the first event at Olympic Park, Newcastle fans were heading back before Parra and Saints got started and I thought, 'How could you turn your nose up at more footy?' Do not get me started on people who leave a tight match or concert 5min before the end to 'beat the traffic'.

I think with this Canberra one, it was because it was the later match, not sure if that’s the official reason though.

But yeah always hate people trying to force me out to beat the traffic when I go with them

Yeah I did hear about that. On one hand I feel like it’s a big statement while on the other hand I feel like it’s a bit virtue-signally and unfair on the players who did nothing wrong.

Girls play soccer more than league. The NRLW could probably increase their crowds too based on Jillaroos and Origin games. The Dub should try and attract more Matildas fans, especially the ones who happily watch Arsenal and Chelsea games. The Dub is actually decent quality and more fans and money would increase the quality.

I think it’s based on tickets sold but I could be wrong.

Especially at concerts that cost a shit ton of money. But yeah even if we’re losing I stay till the end just to get my money’s worth and pay respect to the players.

At women’s games you see less of this cause they meet with the fans. If the men did that I think less people would leave (and probably more people would come, kids and young people love it).

Oh god no! I've had the odd less serious one come along and if we're down 2:0 they suggest leaving. An acquaintance who sometimes is about on match day always suggests just stay at the pub or beer garden despite having bought a ticket.

Football participation has awlays been highest but for some odd reason there is a fine line between playing yuorself then going off to the ground to watch. As a kid who played RL, we were hyped to go see the big boys later that night or on Sunday.

I see it now with girls too who love to go to the NRLW games if possible around their own game. Do football playing kids and families just want to do other stuff on the weekend?

I rarely plan anything urgent needing a swift getaway so I'm happy to linger and dawdle post event, pub of course or if there's a station less used a bit of a walk away you've avoided the crowds with ease. Wembley post event is nonsense where they rope you in on Wembley Way and only let a certain number through. It makes sense for crowd control but the stwards are pedantic.

Next time I'll walk to the Nat rail station or hang a bit longer.

This is a key point you're right. They need to make the games feel special or community based it does feel like you're watching a random park game
