Australian Dual Nationals 🇦🇺🏳️

He must be looking at the recent transfers of Herrington, Irankunda and Beach to big Leagues/Clubs off the back of the exposure they had at the World Cup and questioning his decision…sliding doors moment for him and a demonstration for other dual nationals of the value the World Cup can bring to your career.

Just wish we had Triantis and Segecic to pretty much make it the case that I won't be annoyed at any selection ever again with all the depth. I'm generally happy with most players selected but for Popovic's tactics.

Robertson really needs to be brought in now.

Selection has been a mixed bag. I thought we mucked up not bringing in more dangerous wide forwards, and some depth at centre forward and right back at the world cup.

Will either be never capped by Croatia or will be capped once or twice. Was a really bad decision by him, as you mentioned, playing for the socceroos would have put him in the shop window club wise.
 
I think it's very premature to say he made the wrong choice. He had only just turned 22 at time of World Cup and was good enough to be in Croatia's extended squad, coming off debut season in Championship where he was top scorer for his club. This assertion that he made the wrong choice also assumes Poppa would have selected him in the squad, which is debatable. He still has 2 if not 3 world cup cycles ahead of him, plus probably 3 Euros. All Poppa had to do was put him on for a minute in a friendly against New Zealand, but that was too much for him, and now we're without one of our brightest young talents who was previously committed to representing Australia.

Would have had to have been either of the Japan or Saudi Arabia final qualifiers to do that, not a friendly (match in an official competition) is the terminology, and they were the only two matches in an official competition after he turned 21 we had before the World Cup (unless... the FIFA Series counts)

Playing in a bottom of the championship side is not good enough to be selected for the Croatian national side, as it proved when they announced their world cup squad.

Meanwhile he'd been picked for the last several squads under Popa albeit just didnt get used.

In a larger World Cup squad coming off good form with Portsmouth, its very reasonable to assume he would have been picked over an old and underdone Leckie, average A League player Nish, 2nd tier Spain Mabil and/or bottom of Eredivisie Hrustic, some of which hadnt been involved with roos squads for a long time.

It will prove a very silly decision by Segecic, and hes already missed 1 world cup cycle as a direct result of him throwing his toys out the pram. A world cup cycle that could have put him in the shop window.

Not giving Sega match minutes in those friendly games against NZ is one of the worst decisions Popa has ever done as national team coach, any competent manager would not have done that just to waste a players time to fly him around the world just to get to splinters on the bench.

No wonder Sega left us.

Popa should never be forgiven for not capping Segecic...I certainly won't.
