We played 442 under Farina and i assure you Chipperfield had not played in the backline prior to Gus coming in.
If you look at our starting lineup against England in 2003, our backline was Neill RB, Moore and Popa CB and Lazaridis LB. Chippers and Emo our wingers, Kewell and Viduka our strikers (kewell in free role), and this was pretty much our 1st choice 11 between 2002 and 2005 with grella, Cahill and Bresch gradually overtaking Okon and Skoko in the CM roles.
When Gus came in he completely shook things up, using firstly a 3331 wingback system with Emo and Chippers wingbacks (with Neill Sweeper) amd then later a 4231 with Chippers and Emo proper fullbacks with Neill a CB.
This radically changed the team for the better, along with Cahill becoming a global star taking the mantra from Dukes and Kewell, and was utilised further forward as an AM than Farina had been using him.
