Meanwhile Perry Park and the Queensland football fraternity snubbed!

It’s being framed as an Olympic legacy play ( Rugby Sevens is an Olympic sport apparently)

Rugby a low participation sport compared to football has played the high-performance + Olympic + “bring programs to Queensland” card here!!

A 2,400 seat stadium. FFS that is absolutely not what is needed in Brisbane.

And I note the reference to $31.5 million for a rugby high performance complex that opened in 2023. So Rugby Union in Queensland can get funding for a high performance center, but Football Australia still have nothing for the national team.

Just sad.

TBF that 2,400 Seats is for the replacement for the eastern stand currently closed due to it no longer being considered safe for use.

Adding the 2,400 seats to the 3,100 already for the stand that works etm plus the 1,500 odd standing on the hill and you will have a decent 8,000 capacity boutique stadium. Just a shame its for the wrong sport and has a bunch of transport issues.

Not saying you’re suggesting so, you’re a good faith actor, would just say these can’t have their cake an eat it too. The Marconi club is the club. If the apl/fa want venues like that in play, they should be accepting the club that built them. it ain’t right to just be booting the clubs that created these assets for Australian football with their blood sweat and treasure, telling them that they’re no longer wanted/needed only to turn around and want to use the facilities when it suits.

I agree was just pointing out it was more enjoyable with a boutique venue. Hope these clubs are brought back to the top!

The powers that be at the top in this country seem to conflate realistic downsizing into appropriately sized venues with conceding defeat/an nsl era style death spiral experienced by the likes of Carlton moving from venues like princess park to Epping stadium etc etc

We have a lot of non football people in government. When there was talk of sm entering the a league all these accounts popped up saying bringing in ethnic cubs would destroy the a league

Everyone of the accounts had tweets about other codes every day but no tweets about the a league even during the season

I wonder if the non football people in government is still pushing us in the direction of these dumb ideas

I don’t know what the state of things on the ground there but Qld seems pretty bad re funding of the game unfortunately

Rugby has been very effective at leveraging old boy private school networks. Nothing will save it, though, from becoming an irrelevance.

Yep.. Rugby still has its strongholds, the private-school system, the high-performance pathway, the occasional big Bledisloe Cup Test or Lions series that pulls a crowd and some TV numbers....

But in everyday Australian sporting life like the suburban club, the local junior comp, the pub conversation, the casual sports fan who isn’t already inside the game it’s been steadily losing ground for a long time.

I watched a few Brisbane Strikers games at Ballymore back in the day and it's a horrible place to try and get to. Plus you had the issue with the sun in some of those late afternoon games. It's a shithouse place really, Rugby Union are welcome to it!

Agree. Ballymore was never an A League option.

There are no options for the A League for a decent stadium in Brisbane - really, none. And it is massively affecting support for the team.

That's an interesting observation. If you were a 'soccer-hating' acolyte of the AFL and wanted to protect your sports interests, ensuring different football groups remain at odds is the best value for money way to keep the sports growth suppressed. Self-interest and protecting power at the detriment for the sport overall is the biggest cause for why we keep repeating the same mistakes. Competing sports can just help us continue to fight against each other and do the work for them.
