A few points.

* Alex - when he expressed concerns about the interest in Portugal and Spain for the next World Cup, they are absolute tourist hot spots! Morocco is quite a destination for Europeans too.
Good points about AFL, League, union global quality, compared to AL not boasting world talents/quality. Agree about WSW scoring 4 goals against an EPL team not being capitalised on.


* Danny - interesting insights suggesting how NPL clubs are looking at recruiting quality experienced players, whilst AL clubs are relatively young, and the AL teams expose inexperienced players early in the Cup. As a corollary, many top players have transferred from the AL.
Also, strongly endorse Danny's point that for the first time, NPL clubs, like South M, dominated the game and deserved to win against AU. In the past we have seen a few NPL teams 'nick' results against AL clubs. SM played AU off the park. SM dominated possession, territory and scoring chances.

* Grazor - given the loquacious guests, Alex and Danny expounding on matters football, you hardly made any points other than posing questions as a host. Good points made by you when describing the standard of the AL using Oliver Bozanic and Vidosic getting game time in the Swiss league being a new revelation, after many players like Shane Smeltz and Eric Paartalu, playing English L2 and Scotland 2, doing well in the AL - arguing AL isn't getting worse. Also, many Aussies spending more time on benches in the past.

For Danny and Alex, there are still 2026 WC games available to watch on SBS replays.

* 80 000 to watch 2 EPL clubs in a friendly says it all. Most Aussies are Eurosnobs or UEFA adulators. They refuse to watch AL and probably NPL. Agree that marketing is an issue raised by Alex.

* I might be wrong, but I would have thought AL clubs would be really keen to stay in the Cup, because it provides a steady stream of regualr games until the AL season opens. Hence, motivating players to do well, despite not being match-fit. Good points from Alex about players not being inactive in the offseason, using Perth Glory as an example, but it probably isn't like match fitness.

Great listen so far. I've just heard your excellent question about "what is a reasonable demand" regarding salaries. After two minutes replying from Beau, the only thing of substance I heard was along the lines of 'it's a revenue issue, we still want our share'.
"Our share of revenue has been reasonable for 20 years" he said. So if your share of revenue has been reasonable, why are you asking for more when revenue is less?
Anyway, I'll finish the pod 👍🏼

Yeah great interview mate. Not suprised to hear yet ANOTHER mention of converting football supporters in Australia into Aleague supporters.

I'd love to know the actual numbers. They can't be asking for more money that the clubs don't have or are clubs spending money in stupid areas.

Always been the case barring the early times of "marque" players - then there was obvious quality many times on the park.

Pretty normal nothing is capitalised when any Oz football does well - mind you Chelsea are in such a transition mode incl new gaffa.
A 16yr old started up, many other academy young uns - 9/10 youth started up fyi. Kudos WSW scoring 4 though.

Post covid the financial reset AL has had to deal with is evident in the league and Cup, nothing new there.

There have been quite a few great Cupset wins by NPL clubs that were not nick results.
The change hasn't been evident due to just one recent game played by SMH v AU.

Drop the eurosnob/uefa adulators - most of these people wouldn't have any interest following either league period, event goers alot of them I'd hazard to guess, plus many fams that their kids look up to idol club names, there is nothing wrong with that - least its bringing $ into the coffers thats a positive not a negative.

Marketing isn't going to convert the unconverted, the vibe of the competitions need to lift first and foremost.
There is a huge black hole between Pro and Semi Pro down to grass roots - till something gets sorted/aligned no marketing is going to increase bums on seats but for the odd derby.

I shake my head to the countless theories/excuse's on not performing - well lets say "competing"......
I get not being "tuned" regards AL Clubs but considering the very long off season AND they know the Cup fixtures long before a ball is kicked in anger it seems to me they are lacking a number of things - mostly preparation.
Owners/ more so management are they expressing the need of their employees to be better prepared.
Any diligent Pro already starts their own private training in keeping relatively fit. (sure not match fit)
Do they arrange 2/3 pre warm up Cup games ?
Do they pick up their training regime as a squad (2/3/4) in how many weeks in advance ?
Seriously can't be that hard for as mentioned they have countless months off before their first Cup game.
Match fit ? after all you have 5 subs come game time - late teen/early 20's your as fit as anything barring game legs, 5 subs does cover a lot of tired legs.

For those who don't know, Beau Busch is a former SFC player. I'm not sure how many AL games BB played in the early years of the AL?

I think BB may be a trained journalist and was writing insightful football articles for a while.

BB is particularly eloquent. He elucidated the scenario where under FFA the TV deal was $60 million per annum compared to the current $20 million with the AL clubs' ownership of the AL.

Frank Lowy was a successful businessperson, not one to waste money in his FFA tenure. Beau also stated that there has been a lot of current money recently wasted in the Aus football milieu.

I was interested that players current wages only amount to 34% of AL clubs' total budget.

Beau also said that Auckland are currently leading the way in terms of community and corporate engagement.

I also found it interesting that Beau said many senior Matildas want to return to the AL at the end of their careers, but the ALW's wages are currently poor, hence acting as a disincentive to return.

He was at Sydney FC❓ I just remember him from North Queensland Fury, and as far as his journalistic side goes, an exposé on the Fury’s 2011 demise that he wrote for an issue of the 🇦🇺 edition of FourFourTwo magazine.

I can’t remember him playing for FNQ.

BB must be one of the smartest footballers around. I think he could make a good media pundit.
 
Beau Bush also stated in the Pod that losing players from the ALeague was a failure - or words to the effect of not being able to retain Aus nationals to the A League was cause for concern.

I worry about this view

we went through a real dark age in player development for the roos and a big reason why we seem to be emerging seems to be that we are playing and selling youth domestically

I guess it means that under a closed shop we have a tradeoff between the success of the a league and the success of the roos. The better one days the worse the other, because as soon as financial pressure on the league is relieved they stop playing kids (or at least play them less often).

I guess the magic sauce of p&r is it keeps the financial pressure on teams even when the league improves?
