Football Australia were never going to replace Ernie Merrick after retrenching him though and have done away with the technical director role in favour of the current model where they give full control to Heather Garriock with regards to setting the direction of football in Australia along with the day-to-day running of the national teams.

That's a mistake that needs to be fixed.

I hope I'm wrong but I've assumed Garriock wants that job or already has it. If that is correct then it's really bad 'corporate governance' (uggh, I feel gross just saying it) for a start. It's just not done except under emergency or unforeseen circumstances and in the very, very rare event that a board member takes on an executive or administrative role, it's temporary.

I mean, that's what these boards are supposed to be for. To avoid conflicts of interest and making sure the people signing the checks aren't the same people paying the bills with them. It's also to ensure a board maintains a strategic and governance lens while the executive gets on with the day to day administration of the business.

In addition to that, does Garriock have the skill set to carry out the technical football-specific duties required? I know she was a Matilda, but I can't recall her being involved in football in a technical way since she retired.
