We also lack the pace/movement - that extra half yard.
Interesting point there, LFC.

The 3 fastest players at the WC in the early rounds were Bos, Haaland and Toure - in that order - all between 36 - 37kph. In club football, Irank has been recored at this speed too.

Is it a case where Aus had 3 of the quickest players in the comp, whilst the rest of the team is a bit slow? Saw O'N make a few fast sprints. Ditto Okon. I hadn't thought either were partiularly fast prior.

Quick speed of thought and reading of the game prior to it unfolding, can negate slow speed over the turf.

I suppose the mention to catch breath is the amount of back passing more than I like seeing but that again backs my theory re quality.
I just wonder if you watch a lot of club football where they play forwards more, but lose the ball more frequently through turnovers?

A point you and Sutho have made, and with a fair bit of validity, is that there is a sameness about international teams' playing style. After watching the WC, there is plenty of merit in your views.

agree your previous post of not having to full on press as the top NT's or Clubs but our set up is that deep/and held back agreed we manage just 2/3 as mentioned.
The Dutch used similar formations to Aus - off the ball in the group stages and both on and off the ball against Morocco.

However, in their Attacking Transition, the 6-10 secs when a team regains the ball, they moved their 5 at the back in a 5-4-1, to a 3-4-3, much more quickly than Aus did.

I've been trying to finish the second half Aus v USA. It suddenly doesn't seem as relevant.

I'm probably in the minority on G and G who agrees with the bigger WC numbers. I'm not sure DR Congo and Capo Verde would have qualified in the 32 team comp?

Still haven't seen Capo V v Argentina yet. However, saw the entire England v Congo game.

I was impressed with the organisation and tactical quality of Congo. England found them hard to penetrate, who eventually came third in the overall WC.

Moreover, the technical ability of the Congo players was high.

There were also 2 Congo wide players, 1 on each flank, who were decent ball players and worried England with their dribbling and ball carrying.

Congo were athletic and had pace all over the pitch too.

I think England only won 2-1. Have no idea what the structure is of DR Congo football is like, but the current team is pretty impressive in all facets of play.

I've avoided looking at the first half on replay! I should have a look - but it was our only bad half of of football at the WC.

From half time until about 60 mins, from looking at the replay, we have done well against USA. I think Volpato has just come on and produced something different. I don't like saying it, but Leckie going off has helped.

I will be able to answer better in a few days, when I look at more of the USA replay.

I think you need to watch the first half if you want a more well rounded perspective of our tournament. It was really poor. I don't think we did well against Egypt. I think we had a good defensive tournament but were really poor offensively. Our transition was slow, set pieces poor. Team selections for our forwards was erratic and I think we were trying to be too clever.

Against the US, rubbish but we were stoic (but ineffective) in the second half. Paraguay - two underwhelming teams barely landing a punch on each other. At least Paraguay had Enciso who was the only one of 22 players that looked consistently dangerous. Egypt was a shitshow.

This idea that you only had one poor half (we in fact had at least 6) is pointless. Nobody's giving out points for aggregated performances across 45 minute halves.

If your right re Bos and Toure good good - Toure wasn’t used enough and at the end of movements more than creating and we know Bos is tops just our game doesn’t allow him to express himself enough.

Reading the game one two steps ahead added by one touch football is speed full stop.
I don’t see us enough playing with control speed one touch and players carrying on supporting in sync enough due to our handbrake tactics.
Alas - our Popaball holds us back.

I watch plenty club football as much as I watch international football.
I do watch the odd AL game it’s not that hard to figure it out.

It’s a bit like a box of chocolates.
Some a dour boring or yuk - some are ok and the remainder are brilliant.

As I said lack of speed or transition.
We are not quick enough

Our speed didn't bother me so much as our speed of handling and decision-making. This affects our transition time and our ability to change shape. Which ironically we did pretty well with defensively but offensively not so much. As for Toure having speed, well he seemed most ineffectual so his speed was kind of irrelevant. I'm not sure why, was he injured or sick? Maybe it was that the midfield was too compressed with the defense in BPO so the physical transition gap was too large? Looking at the FIFA stats from the WC it was our physicality and defensiveness stats that were good. Most others were comparatively poor to where we ended up in the competition.

If Popa discards the 3 CBs, given Rowles , who has been a decent contributor in WCQ games was axed from the squad, CB is arguably Aus's strongest position ATM. Apart from the first half against USA, the Aus defence, including the entire team unit defending from the front, was the strength of the WC.

If we were to go to a 4-3-3 and 4 at the back in general we would have to leave out a pretty decent player whose specialist position is CB.

Hrustic, making the squad as an attacking player, was far less effective in his position than defender Rowles, was as a CB and LWB.The latter was discarded.
Miller can play CB too, especially in a 3 as the RCB so yes we are very strong there, with Burgess a bench option now also since the progression of Herrington.

Our backup CBs now are Burgess, Miller, Geria, Rowles, Degenek.

There GK (Beach and Ryan), LWB (Bos, Metcalfe, Behich, K.Bos), RW (Volpato, Mcgree, Tilio) and LW (Irankunda, Kuol, Younis) we are all strong in.

CF, RWB and CM is where we need strengthening.

I suspect they don’t see the structure of football as the key to success. They probably just pick the most skilled kids at all representative levels and wait for them to get picked up by Euro clubs.
The fact that we have more players in decent leagues than ever, despite the sh1tshow that is the ALeague and non existent PR sort of indicates to me that structure is over rated as any sort of contributor to success.

What's your assessment of the US game?
I haven't been willing to rewatch the first half again. Too depressing!

However, I've now finished the second half against USA and think Aus was clearly the better team in that half. Even though the ref tried valiantly to ensure USA were not penalised by the Aus resurgence.

At the time it may have been close to the best team Aus put out in the WC - Bos played Left WB, we still had Italiano as RWB, and Volpato played his first WC minutes. We lost Italiano shortly after this game, and Bos couldn't play the last 45 mins and ET against Egypt.

After 2 others have mooted Villupillay as a WB, and Grazor has sagely suggested Metcalfe as a WB, not sure why Popa hadn't played them earlier in friendlies? On paper they have the skill set to succeed as WBs. They could have been better than Trewin ( not defensively) and Behich, but we will never know?

After being overly harsh on Volpato's decision-making, just a few times, he really made a difference when looking again at the US second half. So often if given the ball, he was able to turn and move forwards, plus beat players, in confined spaces. I didn't care much about Triantis and Segecic not committing to Aus, but Volpato offers something different. He is a huge asset for Aus.

When Volpato was on the pitch, it didn't take long for him to draw multiple defenders, because of his dribbling ability. Unfortunately, it showed up Metcalfe's inability to do the same. Only 1 American needed to close down Metcalfe, whilst Volpato drew more defenders from then on as soon as he was on the ball - in the next games too. The attention to Volpato created space for other Roo attacking players to exploit.

Moreover, Volpato is a goalscoring threat shooting from range as well.

The ref stopped a pen for Irankunda, which IMO most refs would have awarded. I think sadly it is human nature that most refs are more timid awarding big decisions to home teams/higher ranked teams in WCs. The ref also made a lot of other mistakes in the second half - all favouring the USA. The dyed blond American LB could have been sent off for accruing 2 yellows, the second not awarded.

Obviously everything worked out for the USA in the first half - the game plan of intensive Squeezing in our defensive half and their execution of the plan. The US defenders were more alert to Aus's dangerous accelerated attacks than Turkey's defensive line.

In the second half the Squeezing intensity dropped from the USA. Aus had more ball and was able to build up more easily. We also had some decent chances to score, but like everybody probably reading this, I was surprised that Popa played Irank as target striker in a central position?

Can't remember if Geria came as a Sub against USA? He had a very good second half. The back three were pretty compact and solid in that half.

I think it was Punchanello who thought Aus had 2 good halves out of 8 played. I beg to differ. Obviously the first half against USA was a shocker. Plus we were disappointing in Extra Time against Egypt.

IMO all other 7 halves ( only have the second quarter to watch against Egypt), were quite decent given the calibre of the teams we faced. The most disappointing thing was that after the first 2 halves in ordinary time, Egypt were the better team in Extra Time. Even if we lost the pen shoot out, we surprisingly faded in Extra Time compared to Egypt.

We wasted best opportunity to advance to the second knockout round in a WC, as Argentina 2022 and Italy ( 10 men) in 2006, were too good for Aus. Egypt weren't.

Agree with all this post, except the last half sentence re structure, CO.

The Football Fed Aus Tech Dept went all over the world on a fact finding mission and determined that for sustained success at WC level, an organised national football body was paramount.

ATM I have a positive impression of the entire tournament - by not watching that awful first half against USA - again, Q!

I think everything was bad in that first 45 mins.

Popovic got schooled by Pocchetino. You can't have a balanced opinion of him as a coach without watching that half. The outnumber created in midfield killed us and Popovic didn't adapt quickly enough.

Perhaps it's a philosophical difference, but I don't think any half is good that is built around deliberately handing over the initiative to the other side, if you lose. If you win you look like a genius, but you are handing it to the gods. In a calculated and deliberate way we conceded field position and possession in every game. It was a choice to implement a low block, a choice to avoid attempting to win the ball higher up the pitch and a choice to sacrifice the strengths of players like Bos in favour of that rigidity. We chose a low risk, low reward approach. And we got exactly what we paid for. 1 win in 4.

I think you could say our defensive approach was more than successful and I would have Popovic as a defensive assistant coach or manager any day of the week. But I also think that we were timid and failed to capitalise on our collective and individual strengths beyond that. I'm not suggesting this is what happened, but this would have been an unmitigated success if your only objective was to clear the group stage, meet the KPI and stay in the job.

In saying all that, I saw a game plan in it which was disciplined and coherent. It had merit. It failed but I think there is probably more to come from Popovic. I think it's plausible that he was forced into this approach by injury and circumstance or a desire to field a young team and not get completely blown out of the water in the process. I also think he could take us to the final of the Asian Cup and set us up for the next world cup and a golden gen.

re speed: for some reason we couldn't keep up our high speed after the turkey game with most players dropping around 3-4km/h iirc

we were one of the fastest teams in the world cup for a single game
