If we even go back to a year or two ago, players who looked secure in Socceroo careers have made one bad choice for their UEFA club of choice, and a few injuries, and they' ve lost a year's development, Robbos.

Gee, things change quickly. Then Herrington comes from nowhere. Ditto the young SFC midfielder - whose name I don't even know?

Hence, other young stars are now nowhere near the national team - Niuewenhof, Teague, Farrell, Jake Hollman, Tilio, Arzani.

Where is Max Balard now? He had some good Eredivisie seasons. I think his Dutch club has been relagated.

Balard had some good Socceroo games, struggled as a sub against Colombia - bang! Gone from the Socceroos!

Paul Okon-Engstler. I wouldn't say he came from nowhere. He was in Benficas youth team so he was on the radar if you followed closely. He had a good year with Sydney. A good example of the importance of senior football, and not waiting too long to get it, but his youth education was pretty good too.

I was aware that he wasn't getting enough game time in Portugal and came back to SFC to achieve it.

I first saw Okon Jr play Aus u20 and Aus u23 football.

In another thread I've appraised a few international teams at the WC, comparatively to the Roos. Anyway, I thought Portugal were one of the three best teams , technically, at the WC. Along with Spain and France. Spain playing Portugal looked like a mirror image.

The 4 best current UEFA leagues outside the UEFA Big Five, are usually Netherlands, Belgium, Portugal and the Swiss. Not sure if this effects Aus players in Posrtugal?

As the WC Portuguese national team players were decidedly superior to the Swiss, Dutch and Belgians at the WC, do the Portuguese clubs expect a higher level of technique than the other 3 leagues? Aussies have had far more success in them than Portugal? I have seen the Portuguese league when visiting Portugal.

NAC got relegated. I reckon he'll leave but stay in the Eredivisie.

I am from Hull and whilst I think its a big thing for the lad I cant help feeling hes going to regret not moving to a more technical league like Spain. The kind of player he is I think playing in Spain would have really developed him into a top player where as going to a team that with the best will in the world will undoubtedly struggle he is going to be tested in a much more physical environment where its simply sink or swim so I hope he swims because he is a real talent that needs good players around him to develop to that next level. Souttar would have been a better choice for Hull but I hope Im proved wrong and the lad takes it all in his st

Wrong player and club fit imo, espiecially as the age hes at.

Then again hes def going to play and be thrown into the deep end. Its going to help him improve his low block defending and toughness thats for sure!

I think thats also a sign of our depth atm D. Add go that list Botic, D'Aggers, Deni Genreau and several others.

It seems like a really short time ago, Herrington was only 3rd choice CB for the Aus u 20s!

Kikianis and Esposito kept him out of the team as first choice CBs.

That was due to age, not ability. He is about 2.5 years younger than those guys. The real thing to mention, was he was one of a few 2007 born players in that team, that was a better future indicator.

Herrington and Beach both going to top 5 leagues. But they both have very identifiable flaws,

Herrington more likely to succeed as he simply needs to get rid of a bad habit of stepping back in anticipation of a break and upsetting the offside trap. Beach though is a poor sweeper keeper and unless Troyes plays very deep he will be found out very quick. He can learn - but it is easier to get rid of a flaw like Herrington's than develop a skill that Beach needs to.

Sorry but being in a youth team, not playing a single second of senior football and then starting in a world cup 12 mths later is literally, coming from no where.

He was always rated in aussie circles yes, but Benfica musnt have thought that much of him as never gave a single minute. He isnt that young either at 21 (20 when he was a Benfica).

Even if a move for Nestory Irankunda during the summer transfer window has collapsed there's still a chance he'll be headed elsewhere during the January transfer window though and it'll be better for him to gain more experience playing in the Championship for at least another half season.

Agree that Nestory Irankunda needs to be getting consistent game time and gaining more experience as a player in the Championship first before he makes the move elsewhere to another league with a higher standard of play.

Really appreciate your post and where you are coming from.

The kid is still 18 until September and there is no doubt Hull won't be the final destination.

I agree with you that potentially this move at this stage of his development may not be seen to being the best possible environment. BUT we are talking about an 18 year old Aussie kid getting mins in the Prem at 18 years of age!! If he turns heads this season then he will have his pick of many elite clubs.

Dean Huijsen went from Bournemouth to Real Madrid and I think Lucas is a year younger than Dean was.

This is to be absolutely celebrated!

Hes good enough already to make the jump. And Sporting play a tonne of matches each season, going deep in most comps so he is practically guaranteed at least decent minutes, especially given they money they would have been spending which was big by their standards (would have been fifth highest theyve ever paid).
