Commonwealth Games

Only once ever (1958). Since they cut the number of sports this year there’s not even rugby sevens (which is usually in it).

The Francophone Games and various regional games events have it but it’s just never been a thing in the Commonwealth Games (other than that one time). The timing’s fairly inconvenient (being literally a week after the World Cup).
 
Will defector and alleged thief track cyclist Matt Richardson hurt Aussie medals chances when he competes for the Pommies over the next fortnite.

Following the Paris Olympics in which he won two silvers and a bronze for Australia, he dropped a bombshell that shook the cycling world by defecting to Britain.

Richardson was subsequently banned for life by AusCycling for leaving the program and was also accused of taking AusCycling property, including a custom bike, cockpit and Olympic race suit to Britain.

Gina offers cash splash for Aussie swimmers at Games​

She has pledged to reward Australian swimmers who win medals and break world records at the Commonwealth Games with sizeable bonuses, individual gold $20,000, silver $15,000 and bronze $10,000.

Potentially the prize pot could reach into triple figures for outstanding athletes.

“I’m hoping that, with these bonuses on offer, we can set a new record this year,” the executive chairman of miner Hancock Prospecting said.

Australia’s richest person, has long been a benefactor of Australian swimming and many of the country’s top swimmers have said they would not have been able to be a full-time athlete without her financial support.

The UK was much more open in letting go of their colonies than France. It took a brutal and bloody eight-year war for Algeria to get independence. Réunion has 900,000 residents but remains a French territory. About half of New Caledonia wants independence, most people deliberately don’t vote in French and European elections and with three failed referendums they’re now migrating here.

One could argue that France cares about its overseas territories nowadays (whereas back then they didn’t unless they had large European settler populations) but once the infrastructure is there I don’t see why France needs to keep them. As long as they’re stable and secular liberal democracies with close ties to France and their allies.

Surely the 2030 Commonwealth Games will be the last cycle before they end up discontinuing them altogether though given that they're on their last legs and more sports are going to be culled in favour of cutting costs.

That is certainly true. They haven't given em all independence, still hanging onto Bermuda and they wont let Spain have Gibraltar even tho it is in Spanish territory.

Look at all these countries. Would make a great little mini youth tournament, sure the "bigger" countries wouldn't bother ( why not us, we have no "professional" league until October, send the Olyroos or the Tillyroos )

They'll never implement football at the Commonwealth Games though but agree that it would be good to have an age grade tournament where we can field the Olyroos and under-23 Matildas to help with their development outside of the Olympics cycle.

Not full 11v11 anyway(unless it’s under specific criteria eg. amateur/semi-pro players only), but other formats of the game - specifically Futsal and beach football - are long overdue to be introduced.

I once heard that ⚽️ was going to be introduced at the Auckland ‘90 edition, but for w/ever reason didn’t end up happening.

Yeah it could definitely work as a youth tournament! I think the main problem is its proximity to the Men’s World Cup. The Olympics doesn’t have this issue because they’re always in a different year.

I wish we had an under-23 women’s tournament (technically the ASEAN Championship is a senior tournament, we just send the U23 Tillies cause we’re too good; in fact we won it last year with only rising Dub stars). The Olympics are a senior tournament for the women so it’d be good to have something (either the Commonwealth Games or the Olympics) to test out the younger girls. The younger boys also only do the Olympics so you could send them too.

Interestingly, the Central American and Caribbean Games (JCC) have a men’s and women’s football tournament. The opening ceremony for that is tomorrow at 7:00am, so it’s definitely possible to have football given they both run at the same time.
