I really have no idea. I think those who watch the final at 5am - 8am on a Monday morning are football fans. I struggle to see (or understand why) that (a) there is a large number of those people who are football fans that would not watch the Socceroos games (inc. games that were on at a decent time on a weekend) and (b) the number of people who fit into the first category is significantly higher than the 'house wife' population that will watch the Socceroos as it is the 'thing to do', or an act of national pride.

It may simply be that being a Monday morning meant that most people watched at home on their own TV and not in gatherings, which made the viewership data appear higher.

I think it's more that 30% of Australian citizens were born overseas. Argentina vs Spain in the world cup final is going to be a much more enticing fixture than Australia v Turkiye to the over 1 million English and Indian Australian residents, for example.
 
SBS reported they had more watching the final on SBS on Demand that on SBS TV, which would indicate a lot of people watched on their phones on the way to work or even replayed on their way to work.

As I said before the final number will come close to 150 million meaning SBS will sadly but more than likely not get the rights next time
 
Breaking news channel 10 are ditching their News plus or the 6:30 to 7:00 show that replaced the Project.

They plan to extend their news to 90 minutes...

They IMO will have to increase their sports reporting to help make up the time slot. APL should be in there pushing for a huge increase in the A-league

I've got the feeling it's going to be on 10/P+.....

Maybe about 20 games fta on 10 and the rest on Paramount.
 
Out of interest I googled Amercian streaming and tv ratings for the world cup.

The final was 62.8 million, and the average across the tournament was 14 million per game with Fox at 7.8 million and the Spanish TV 6.3 million.

The other interesting stat is the breakdown of the generations

Boomers not none but little change from before the WC.

X & Y, much more interest and huge increased in support.

Mils huge interest massive gain and starting to challenge other codes.

Zs huge interest verging on their favourite code.

Alas still young but similar to the Z's

No idea what it all means but the that Football in America has passed the Simons cartoon is good to see

There's definitely a generational transformation taking place in how 'soccer' is viewed/ consumed in the USA......

We might even be seeing a the beginning of a fundamental rewriting of America’s sports culture, moving away from those legacy sports and straight into a diverse, globally connected football landscape.

I mean nobody can really say whether 'soccer' will genuinely challenge traditional grid iron football for the future of American sports fandom, at least on terms of tv consumption......but the data you posted shows that 'soccer' is no longer just an "alternative" choice. It is becoming a foundational part of the modern American sporting identity.

Ditto Australia perhaps???

For them the challenge isn’t about overtaking any of the American sports etc it’s about reaching some sort of parody and making the “big 4” (American football, baseball, basketball, ice hockey) into a “big 5” and being taken seriously as one of the major sports. Thats probably what they can hope for and I think that’s a realistic medium - long term goal given the current trajectory. The US is a big enough “pie” for multiple sports to co exist. Again, kind of like Australia it’s not that there aren’t millions of people there who like soccer, it’s about getting them to participate/engage with the local game outside of the world cup

Yeo....I've got a family branch of Irish-American relatives in Chicago....

One of them with the kids when they were growing up always had Cubs or Bulls gear on the photos and that.

Then all of a sudden I saw one of the kids wearing a Jamie Vardy Leicester City shirt...

Kid got into soccer by playing FIFA on the playstation.

I have been going there near on 30yrs, infact no more, sometimes twice a year.
Have friends East/West/South - business originally but many friends now.
Only the hispanic ones I know talk bout football but first and foremost to mix in they follow and attend the typical yank games to mix in much like Melb and afl following.
Then the actual yankidoodledandy I know no way is football in their sight nor for their kids.
The college system as you'd know is full on starts and stripes despite football gaining a small footprint.
Next put aside those millions who do not live in the typical tourist going cities - redneck world/regional areas, no frigging way is football gonna climb HIGH but gain acceptance depending the migrant family moving in or around towns.

As Mono showed - there's a lonnnng way to change its dna let alone football

Yep....I agree really. Was just trying to provoke a bit of debate on the subject. There’s definitely a big increase in interest across the board though.

As for the travelling rhere I might try and get back over there soon.....

Chicago and Milwaukee ia where the relos are....
