General A Leagues thread (Men and Women) 2026/27 season

Stat from the Jets forum: 7 times in the last 10 seasons it’s been Jets vs CCM in round 1. 6 of those in Gosford.
It is so shit / boring. Over it. Every year they repeat the same thing. Sydney derby week 1 is also a waste.

I wish we had the facilities to do a random draw without having to worry about 10 million stadium conflicts.

As for TV, if I interpret the above correctly, there is no set timesleot. That is a terrible idea. I can see why they may want flexibility to see, partucularly later in the season, to see how teams are progressing and what are the bigger matches. But it may be better to just set out the draw, on a weekly basis, and lock in kick off times closer to the date (ie in 8 week intervals). I really dont see there being too much of an issue with fan / team travels.

and judging by the public outcry, no-one is happy about it being on a friday night.

2 sydney derbies in round one, in 3 years.

yawn.
This goes back to my point the other day. Aussie football fans in general are PLASTIC. Moan, moan and moan even fuckin mor about the day, the time, or even the round the game is played. Just get off your collective arses and get to the game.

No men’s game in Melbourne in opening round. Both away in NZ.

There should be 1 game in Melbourne every weekend. 1 game in Sydney, 1 in NZ, and so on (unless there is an issue with stadium availability). The APL have been doing this for as long as i can remember. It's just so dumb and goes against the best interests of the AL.

With free-to-air games no longer restricted to Saturday Nights, the Sydney Derby is likely to be televised on Ten Network as per Marco Monteverde.

I'm not sure i like it. People like consistency. Plus I am pretty certain there will only be 1 FTA game weekly from next season.

From a Brisbane fan point of view. This is brilliant.

We didn’t play one Saturday night game at home last year. Which obviously makes some sense given us and Perth are the only clubs without a “Marquee” fixture (Perth has the advantage of the Timezone but) so this now allows my club to play at their preferred timeslot without effecting the FTA game which has to involve a NSW side it seems by law.

Victory fans would probably like it too. My crew especially loves Friday night games. We do play a lot of Saturday night games for obvious reasons. I would happily sacrifice some Saturday game for more Friday games.

This sums it all up... What do the Reds players know about Brisbane?

1. They're called the Lions
2. They play in an empty stadium
3. They cashed out with the Herrington clause

Yep.

Frank also started the NSL, BTW.
With Pongrass as you’d know.
2 failed models by Frank great track record nothing to boast of.
One he’s an ethnic next as another business case cuts em off.
Smart man he’s been sport wise lucky he had some $’s though suckered in the sponsers and ate that up as well.
Thank lord he and son got punted off and here we are a screwed system once again up a creek without a paddle.
Absolutely nothing to be happy about for the whole football system.

The thing with all the admins in AU, is they only care about their own and not the overall game.

Maybe abolish the state systems and have one overall association running the game, like they do in most countries.

Then again,, it would take them two generations to agree on it.

Agreed re the last 3 admins been in turmoils - now I have grave concerns the current in a massive red hole and I don’t feel the current CEO is the right pick overall but to get out of financial mess and Goriock seriously and ex player with what cred at corporate level let alone looking over development of the game and our NT.
It’s an utter shit show and your right the Feds are another stumbling selfish lot.
I agree Sutho - the whole game needs a massive flip and you know I have said for a long time we cannot have 2 separate leagues - it’s illogical and un economical or cohesive.
And all are banging on about replacing Popa that I agree with but we have no bananas.
We have players that are still not to a standard to compete to making WC Qrtrs let alone semis.
All the above mess last 20yrs has us as a competing sporting country no where near the threshold of being up there where we all wish for !
The foundations are fucked - you can’t expect to compete with weak foundations.

The only good thing he did, was fall off that stage.
