Japan have gotten the job done previously over Brazil so there's no reason why they can't do so again.
 
I'm on a weekend winery and food tour around Queenslan's Italian-esque Granite Belt region..

There is no hang over vibe of the WC.
Been in Tokyo for a week see nothing of advertising etc though we found a sports pub packed with aussies watching the SOO.
Great weather mid high 30’s in the day.
Nice cold asahi @ A$5/7 can’t complain.
Sushi etc dam noice !
Now off to countryside Mt. Fuji area - utterly superb.
Staying here couple of days before next destination.

Yeah. Great fun. I've had two layovers there so a bit of a jaded view due to fatigue and the heat compared to flying in from Europe but got to see a decent amount of stuff.

Public transport easy and affordable but Taxis I would hope are still surprisingly cheap.

So many food options from basic to luxury. It's actually overwhelming. Slight annoyance is walking takes its toll with all the footbridges so it's a lot of up down and around.

I get your wife’s feeling towards flying - I had it lonnnng ago - worse my wife has/had fear like the ol ethnic the sky is falling over anything even before it happens but she has got over it as did I.
We have already talked about the next Cup - being we have Portuguese fam we are going whatever games are held in Portugal.

I've got fear of other things in our world but fear of flying must be so debilitating especially when people go to the effort and try to break through it. I sometimes imagine what if my brain suddenly feels like I'm trapped on this thing for hours and the oxygen is running out and I can't escape. Thankfully there's enough happening on board to keep me distracted.

Honkers is action vibrant city.
Plenty to see walking around the Harbourside/go for a cruise and eateries galore.
Malls and malls it’s a shopping spree for some.
Back streets are good to venture around.
Summer time warm very humid was there recently 82% humidity.
9.5hr flight.

Yeah that all sounds good. Of course I'd also check out Disneyland and a local football match

We did Tokyo Disney few days back.
Not sure why we went but one of the fam arranged it.
They departed 7am, doesn’t open till 9am and queue’s deep deep.
Then they had to wait another 2hrs before their first ride !
Feck that - too many people.
Sure it’s an amazing place but
Never again theme parks for me.

I went there pre handover in 95 as a wildly adventurous young man.

Went to a fascinating place called The Walled City ( look it up ), ate amazing food ( ever had Bird's Nest Soup? they used to get it from the surrounding islands ) and enjoyed a city that literally pumped 24/7. NYC? pfffffffft. HK back in the day was something else.
 
I'm a big fan of HK too and always stay at a particular hotel on Mody Rd in Tsim Sha Tsuion on Kowloon side now called "Hotel Nikko" although it's had several different names over the years.

Mody Road is the ultimate paradox where paupers and billionaires meet and it captures that classic Hong Kong dichotomy perfectly, a place where the grit of history and the polish of extreme wealth have always seemed to sit side-by-side.

Add that to the sound of a thousand conversations in Cantonese, the neon signs literally buzzing overhead, the smell of street food clinging to your clothes.

I was in HK pre hand over once and it was epic with the humid, electric buzz of Tsim Sha Tsui, it felt like being at the center of the world. Ive been back twice and I mean it's changed considerably but that undeniable, gritty soul is still functioning, it’s a place that feels like it’s becoming more corporate every year, yet remains one of the few places on Earth where you can step out of a world-class hotel and instantly feel the pulse of a million people fighting, working, eating, and living in the most concentrated, vibrant way possible.
