A-League Pay Dispute

Pfa are really anooying
Why, becuase they want their membes to get paid? Do you rock up to work every day for nothing?

“The result of the vote was clear – an overwhelming majority of players elected to reject the APL proposal, believing that it did not advance the players’ and the game’s collective interests,”

What money is there to pay them?

What money is there to pay them?
Same as any other league in the world... pay them their worth, dont cap the whole squad to some arbitrary number just so a bunch of investors don't make a loss. Let the teams with money pay better wages and let the teams that are NOT able to compete financialy get relegated to make way for ones that will at least try.

Do you think your Sheik rama lama ding dong or whatever his name is doesn't have the funding to pay better wages to both male and female squad? He just doesnt because an every shrinking salary cap means he doesn't HAVE to.

But from my understanding the teams don't have the $$$$ to pay or if they do they will do under. My team might be able to pay but what about the others? I dunno I enjoyed sport before I knew all these extra details. We shouldn't even knew these suits surnames lol

Are you telling me decades of exclusivity in the soccer market here in Australia and they still cant pay a decent wage to their players? I dont believe that. Its NOT that they dont have at least 2.6 mill per year to spend its they dont feel they have to with a salary cap in place... and therefore choose NOT to spend past a certain point based purely on profit/loss statement and NOT about football.

I'm usually pro-unions, being a teacher and all. I'd love to know what sort of money PFA want for their players. Based on the article, it only mentions the women. The female players should be paid for the time they put in. They train 4-5 times a week for peanuts. It's like a full time job with part time wages.
Mate 35K a years isnt part time, its what the ISIS brides were paying their slaves in Iran....

A-League fans, this one's unanswerable right now....

Whatever the real numbers, the game is caught between a rock and a hard place here.

Clubs are screaming they can't pay more without going broke. The tight margins, modest crowds, and broadcast deals that aren't exploding the pie. They need a hard cap for survival.

Players hit back.....The league won't pay what the game is worth. They see owners, admin costs, and potential upside, and refuse to accept crumbs while carrying the product.

No CBA, strike rights unlocked, and the new season looming. Everyone wants growth, but no one wants to blink first.

Sustainable future or short-term pain? The fans will lose either way until someone compromises....

Not enough coin — that's the brutal truth at the heart of this A-League mess.

The pie just isn't big enough yet. Broadcast deals (Paramount extension) bring in decent but not transformative money. Crowds and sponsorships are steady for some clubs but fragile overall.

Many teams still rely on wealthy owners plugging losses rather than turning in healthy profits.

Australia has a small population, fragmented sports market, and tje A-League competes against AFL, NRL, cricket, and basketball for hearts, wallets, and TV slots.

A fully professional 12-team league with decent wages, marquee players, and national ambitions requires serious money — but the revenue base (broadcast, crowds, sponsorship) has never consistently delivered it without heavy owner subsidies or bailouts.

I've heard some people within the local Queensland football community who are involved in the sharp end of the game, say that a fully professional structured football national football competition is "delusions of grandeur...."

And while I dont necessarily agree realistic scaling might be the saner path than forcing full professionalism forever.

What do people think should happen?

Just remember - unless things have changed in the last 10 or so years - A-League has a salary floor, not just a cap. So I think the issue is essentially the clubs aren't getting enough from the broadcast deal to cover that (which I believe in the past they did - just - or therabouts), so now it's more out of their pocket.

The only cap we should have IMO is a Visa cap. For everything else, there's PromotionRelegationCard

Without a league clubs releasing budgets it is hard to tell whether or not the pfa are being unreasonable

How does the wages to revenue ratio compare to league 1/2 clubs?

Is there fat to trim in the running of clubs and the a leagues that could be spent on players?

Are there non financial concessions the pfa can make? Allegedly the pfa have restrictions on how much promotion and marketing players can be asked to do

Agree, that's what I had against the whole thing at the start, the PFA (especially Foz) were advocating better wages for players they said, but in reality they were advocating for the few highest earners.
They didn't raise the minimum wage which would effect all players and a salary floor is as stupid as the cap. They effectively put smaller clubs on the brink of bankruptcy and hamstrung the bigger clubs in one go, whilst effectively not increasing the lower wage earners or the high wage earners in what the open market could have demanded.
I also think 1 marquee is ridiculous, if 3 is the limit in Asia then that's what it should be, we would want the best players here to increase the profile of the league and maybe push further into Asia. The biggest problem has been that Ninkovic and your Diamanti's are rare and marquees filled by players hardly befitting the title is more the norm.

We have had few marquee players, currently we have 5 visa players. Real marquees that have added to the game, Yorke and ADP - the rest have been plain visa players.

We need to approach things differently - promotion and relegation is one way but while I want it I don't believe it is the panacea for all ills.

We now have 8 or so of the owner groups have a net worth of over half a billion dollars and many that are multi-billionaires so maybe now is the time to get some real ones in again. Bigger crowds better viewership until the next combined media deal should lead to a better deal and more money all round. The main thing though is a sell on clause for them.

Imagine you find a 'rehab marquee' who is signed under a strict 'pay as you play' clause. If the rehab doesn't work the club can terminate without compensation after a year. If it works release clauses are kick in after a year depending on the market. UEFA and J leagues at decent figures, MLS DP and Saudi higher. Each release though comes with a 20% sell on clause.

So your rehab marquee comes in at $1.5m payed for by a third party agreement as the face of their brand, after a year sold for $5m - $10m to a championship club, sold on for $25million after a couple of more years. Reinvest the money into running your academy and identify the next marquee. If that becomes self sustaining then you can afford to hang onto your academy products for longer and then sell them at a realistic price with their own 20% sell on clauses rather than for the first undervalued nibble to keep the lights on.

The 'rehab marquee' would probably not be the norm - but there are plenty of very high quality footballers tha fall by the wayside and then just drift out of football.

Examples of a rehab marquee would be Dele Alli, Christian Eriksen or Paul Pogba. Of a straight marquee Phillippe Coutinho or returning Socceroo or past Socceroo

The actual article is also contradictory. it mentions a hard cap of $3m plus one marquee, then it mentions going up $100,000 from $2,6m.
They want a season with 2.6 as a soft cap before moving to a 3m hard cap the season after

They're also getting 1,000 people to games outside of finals
