2027 Asian Cup

I hope Ryan and Izzo both call it a day on their international careers. I personally believe that poppa sabotaged any hope of Ryan become the most capped player for the Socceroos. Whatever reason poppa gives or gave is utter bullshit to me.

I would hope that Izzo concentrates on his overseas career instead of being the perennial #2 now #3. Euro clubs take a dim view of this Asian Cup mickey mouse shit and the AFC performance at the WC2026 will cement that idea. Once he looses his place to warm the bench for an ungrateful poppa, it will be another mountain for him to climb to get his place back.. At least with Ryan, he has some recognition playing in LaLiga and having played at an EPL level club.

I hope Beach's career takes off, although I have doubts. Good on him anyway as the lad has more goalkeeping talent in his left pinkie nail than I have in my whole body.

Unfortunately in many cases that’s true, but conversely some have actually looked into it. Joe Gauci got signed by Aston Villa during the Asian Cup (albeit only to go out on loan) and multiple Matildas and Nadeshiko players got moves after the Australia vs Japan Women’s Asian Cup final.

These are the guys who have played there or been called up under Poppa

LWB
[ ] Behich (9) (7-2)
[ ] Bos (10) (5-5)

[ ] Gersbach (training)

+ Rowles who I had as a CB. Silvera played RWB but could go there.

Elder for me is the clear standout. The others would need to elevate themselves with club performances.

A left field one, and I know is usually a RB, but would Kutleshi be capable on the left?
 
Any European club that doesn't take the Asian Cup seriously should say it to their Japanese or Korean star's face.

It doesn't take much for Beach to enter a form slump or have a bad injury so Ryan needs to hang around. Izzo is still going great for his club and Gauci adds depth. We need to nudge the depth a bit more just in case.

Beach is a relatively average sweeper keeper. With the way we are set up under Popovic sitting so deep his flaws are hidden. Conversely, if as everyone seems to be calling for we play more expansively and further up the field then this will be a problem.

Like everyone in a squad this should be a horses for courses selection. With 20/20 hindsight and having been disappointed with our style of play I can completely see why he was picked over Maty. I can't see why Popovic took him off against Egypt. That being said if we are going to be the dominant side (unlikely over Popovic even against minnows) Maty is the right choice to guard against counterattacking goals. At this stage and assuming continued form I think when we have a low block Beach wins out. He does have problems which I think are very easily overcome but I would task Maty to mentor him properly since I have big question marks over all football staff including Juric.

To me if I was Izzo I would be concentrating on my club career. He will not surpass either and there are others coming through.

Regardless of how much we supporters think of the Asian Cup, the cuthroat world of European club football thinks very lowly of it. We don't pay the players wages, the Euro clubs do. If they think it is a shit competition there is nothing we can do about it.

Izzo has serious competition for his spot. Storch is absolutely no slouch and the young fellow Demirci is one to keep an eye on. Paul Izzo comes to warm the pine for the Asian Cup and he invites the others with an opening to cement their name between the sticks. That is the life of the goalkeeping position. At 31 Paul Izzo is running out of options for his future. Plus being the #2 and being overlooked by the manager who plays the #3 choice, puts the future prospects in perspective.

Mat Ryan is in the same boat as Izzo and with a young family to think of, why would he come to warm the pine for Australia after being treated like a brown paper bag full of shit. His form was good before the WC so having Beach replace him must be personal from poppa. Why would he hang around for an ungrateful manager.

I hear that Oliver Kalac has the right pedigree🇭🇷 and is available.:sneaky:

It's true they pay the wages but our players should be held in the same esteem as their African colleagues. I think AFCON is finally going to be a summer tournament but it might depend on location.

Comparing the women's Asian Cup to the men's in this context is pointless.

We can at least refuse to be complicit in their ignorance.

The Asian Cup is extremely important, not least as it's the only major tournament we have a chance of winning.
