Australian transfers 26-27 Summer

14th in the Bundesliga looks exactly the right level to head to. Does €1M seem a bit on the cheap side though? I can’t imagine a 21 year old World Cup starter from Crvena Zvezda or Dinamo would go that cheap…
Absolute bargain. A League players are some of the best buys.

I get Geria is at the end of his career but the valuation of 150k is just laughable given his experience and ability.

He'd be at ease in League One when there paying a million or more for comparable players.

One of my Sydney FC mates observed that Okon Jr might have had a minimum fee release clause, given his age, pedigree and the fact he signed a 3 year deal with us.

No idea if that’s correct or not but it would make a lot of sense and explain the relatively low transfer fee.

Great move for him, the only issue is the fee feels so small it’s almost like pocket change given the amount of T5 clubs pay for players.

Let’s hope there is a sell on clause as well in case if he moves higher up.

Australia needs to rebuild its reputation first and its relationships with European clubs before it can really demand multi-million Euro transfer fees.

I think with this crop it’s a good start, but need to do more.

This is their transfers last season. Lower end of the fees paid. Probably undervalued a little but not drastically.

The A league needs to get to a standard where players can make the transition and play first team football immediately. At the moment this is only happening for smaller clubs/leagues, hence smaller fees paid. If bigger clubs think they can get an immediate starter, they will be able to pay bigger fees.

He hasn't played...yet. But if the WC performances didn't already, this transfer and playing Bundesliga will justify his original selection based on potential alone, prior to any real professional career.

Thank god Popa is a manager so focused on youth development.
1. He has played and proved he can play at the top level (early days I know)
2. Everyone on this forum is demending we cap every eligible Socceroo the minute they hit the youth squad in Europe. Okon was born in Belgium: we capped him.
3. Alot of people were saying he only got picked because of his dad. Well, he just got picked up by a Bundesliga club.

Assuming he isn't going to get loaned out the minute he arrives, we just had an A-League player get transferred to a top 5 league. This is great news.

Everybody that claimed nepotism have egg on their faces.
How?

It is clear nepotism. He is a decent player, and good luck to him, but for the season he has had (solid / decent, but not standout) there is no justification for (a) his selection in the squad over other better performing players and (b) the amount of minutes he got in the World Cup, again ahead of players who have far more of a justification for being selected. He did well in the World Cup, and credit to him for that, but he was given the opportunity to do so above others who deserved the opportunity ahead of him. That fact that he was given that opportunity ahead of others more deserving, and his father is on the coaching staff, is nepotism.

The situation should never have arisen. If Popovic was considering Okon-Engstler, Okon (Snr) should have stood down from the coaching staff, or more importantly, FA should have forced that to occur.

Two things can be true at once to be fair. Happy to say, I thought nepo baby, has proven himself to be a very good player, happy to be wrong. But until we cap others in the same manner (which is a good thing) then there’ll still be nepo discussions. Happy to be wrong twice, will be stoked actually
