Sign Up Now!Thats true. What we do have is a lot of players of similar ability. We've only got a couple that really stand out to me. Thats why squad selection is always controversial. We need to regenerate a little bit but we have a lot of decently experienced players on the fringe that an injury crisis can't really exist. Guys like Rowles, Silvera and Teague can come into an extended squad and we won't be nervous about their abilities or efforts.
I'm not saying seek out a Boyle return but to have some of these guys will around as squad reserves isn't a bad thing.
It's controversial because the workmanlike players are prefered to the skillful or attacking players imo.Thats true. What we do have is a lot of players of similar ability. We've only got a couple that really stand out to me. Thats why squad selection is always controversial.
Woof, what a stinking take this is. Can he do anything other than look for ways to bag the league?
So he blames the A-League for the World Cup failures that were Beach, Behich, Okon-Engstler, and recent departee Herrington? The mind boggles. Come on, Mike![]()

Well lets look at this by positionsI feel ambivalent about our player development to be honest. Simultaneously excited it is better but depressed it is still below the gg
Also concerned that good player development in a closed shop seems to require the a league clubs to struggle off the field so they give youth a go out of desperation (with the partial exception of au of course)
Luongo never played in the AL. He started out at Tottenham. Make it Jedinak insteadWell lets look at this by positions
GK, incumbent, Beach is new & young hard to compare, however Ryan right up there with GG Keepers, not saying better but up there.
Defenders I would say Sottar, Cicati, Herrington, Burgess, Bos & Italiano better the GG.
Midfield, yeah no doubt GG midfielders are much better then this current squad, however, this so called 'Closed shop league' has produced, Mooy, Luongo & Rogic, they match up with the GG.
Forwards, well no comparison GG, Dukes, HK, Alosi, Kennedy, especailly Dukes & HK so far in front not funny, but the current lot some potential there.
I would disagree a little with you on this. The current defenders are not better than GG. They hopefully will be, the potential is there. But they clear level/s below.Well lets look at this by positions

Loved your work through the WC.https://football360.com.au/australia-world-cup-analysis-entire-campaign/
World Cup review - looking ahead to the next cycle.
Lucas Neill played right back for most of those seasons & would accept him ahead of Italiano at right back.I would disagree a little with you on this. The current defenders are not better than GG. They hopefully will be, the potential is there. But they clear level/s below.
Lucas Neill was an EPL starter for 8 seasons. No one is close to that yet. Souttar and Burgess' careers are not dissimilar to Popovic (one year EPL, 4 championship, J1). Even Chipperfield and Wilkshire at big clubs in tier 2 leagues played equivalent level to Bos, Italiano at a relegation battler in Austria isn't close.
Even the missed opportunity of Luongo, Mooy and Rogic, that we almost never saw. Injuries aside, these guys are slightly below Bres, Grella and Culina. Two Serie starters for years and a starter at a huge club in PSV.
The GG were just really good. They almost certainly underachieved. I do think this current side is the first that could possibly equal them. But it is years away if it does happen.
It's good to even be able to have this type of conversation and it being close. It has been a pretty rough 20 years.Lucas Neill played right back for most of those seasons & would accept him ahead of Italiano at right back.
Circati has now played 2 seasons in Serie A & has captained his side.
Souttar's performances at 2 World cups surpasses any other Aussie defenders.
Herrington, yes potential, but already sort by Barcelona, thats pretty impressive.
I think that there are numerous reasons for this. It's good that we getting better. It's good to even be able to have this type of conversation and it being close. It has been a pretty rough 20 years.
Football always changes, rivals kept up while we went backwards. I think Foster said that we were the only league in the world with no underage teams/academies.I think that there are numerous reasons for this. It's good that we getting better.
The GG was a wonderful time, but even they would struggle on how the game is played today bar a few of them. Even GKs need to be good with their feet.
We had a low base & did not move fast enough with the times, we rarely produced players with great first touches, hence the likes of Bresc, Mooy, Kewell & Viduka were so precious

Don't disagree, this I say is our biggest issue, we didn't use the foundation of the GG team compared to say the same Japan team we beat in 2006, they move on in leaps & bounds, they had academies & work on a certain style, based on both Brazil & Croatia, where technical ability was the uppermost importance.Football always changes, rivals kept up while we went backwards.
