FIFA 2026 WC - general

It'd be hilarious if Balogun gets a red card against Belgium.

Klopp getting plaudits for coming out saying how bad the red card suspension is. How many times has he gone to the ref after a match and moaned about a card and said he's wrong?

You might say he doesn't follow up with trying to get it overturned yet if there were a review process he'd be using it.

I wonder what his original opinion of the decision was.

Asked, isn't demand or commanded. Yet why even get involved? The fact that there's a FIFA provision to even do this is baffling.

The political involvement should be a breach of FIFA standards.

A source with intimate knowledge of the process told The Post on Sunday that, despite FIFA’s rules that a case such as Balogun’s cannot be appealed, a group that was led by U.S. Soccer CEO JT Batson and COO Dan Helfrich fought the ruling based on VAR having been applied incorrectly.

They immediately put this process into motion Wednesday night after the U.S. defeated Bosnia.

To make out that this is simply a direct favour at the request of the President is entirely false. That's the framing. It's been stated that US Soccer immediately built an appeal case and took it forward to the FIFA review committee.

Whether the process was started by Trump or the US football association is beside the point. The question you need to ask is; if the same had happened to Taremi from Iran or Toure for the socceroos, would the red have been suspended? I think we all know the answer is no. This being the case means the decision is inately political clear corruption.
For the record I believe there should be a proper post match review process for incidents such as this like there is in other sports, which is applied evenly to all sides fairly. As it stands however, there is not and this should not have happened.

Do nations have the opportunity to appeal to the committee for review?

I'll have to read up on this. The committee members are from a range of federations and to think so many would bulk at a request or perhaps due to pressure from the boss.

All this corruption talk this world cup.

This is the worst world cup in history. Fuck didnt think it would be possible to beat the corrupt qatar bid of 2022, but it did.
The football and cultural exchange side of things had been going well until all of this.

The visitors have really enjoyed their trips and the matches have been exciting.

It shows the governing body and the officials are one stupid thing away from putting that into the spotlight.

Guillermo Ochoa has retired from all association football at the conclusion of Mexico's World Cup campaign after having featured for them in six World Cup cycles including this one, calling time on a 22-year career which saw him ply his trade in France, Spain, Belgium, Italy and Cyprus in addition to the Mexican league.

To be fair - at least CR7 still sat out the automatic one-match suspension.

The issue I have with this, is that it's not a rescinded red card, it's a suspended suspension. That should not be a thing ever for the automatic one-match suspension UNLESS they completely rescind the red card. Nothing that's been put out suggests to me that it's been fully rescinded.
Exactly, why suspend the suspension? It’s like delaying when a criminal gets put in jail.

Not as much as I should. Life takes over and well things fall by the wayside. I've been back watching for the last 8 years. Palmeiras is the club my mum has been a lifelong supporter which made me a lifelong fan much to the old man's ire (Aris fan through and through). Brazilian A and B are entertaining C and D not so much.

I've advocated for our youth to look at South American leagues for career progression as they ALL practice the dark arts, a skill which is sorely lacking in all Australian players.

It is physical, much like Aus league (Paraguayan, Peru 2 and Colombia 2 immediately spring to mind. The technical level in all the top leagues is very good quality for the money clubs spend. All round, a season or two in any of the leagues would do any of our youngsters the world of good. Only problem is monetary and payment for services. That said it has been noted that Australians have had troubled monetary relations with European clubs and Asian clubs (Ali Abbas at Pohang springs to mind).

The added bonus for me is that most of the games are in business hours and are in general easy to "in match" hedge bet.
Yeah I agree, I’d love to see more of our players play in the Americas. I think the only thing stopping them is that most Latin Americans don’t speak English and only speak Spanish or Portuguese (and in some cases Indigenous languages).

Another legend of his country ending a prolific career.

President Donald Trump: Directly contacted FIFA President Gianni Infantino to review the red card Folarin Balogun received during the previous match, and subsequently welcomed the decision to overturn his suspension.
Senators Tom Cotton and Ted Cruz: Publicly applauded the intervention and FIFA's ruling to clear Balogun.
Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick: Discussed strategies with administration staffers while traveling to correct the red card and ensure U.S. Soccer had the best possible chance to succeed against Belgium.

The case was initially started by US Soccer and their executives and lawyers. What would've been interesting is to see whether the appeal would've succeeded without the political involvement.

To say the this is simply out of a political corner is wrong. Politics shouldn't have got involved but the case hardly interested anyone when US Soccer instigated it as soon as the full time whistle blew.

I'm reading they had a lot of lawyers circling and that FIFA didn't really want to have to go through all of that so just cut Balogun loose.
