Poppa Out

Locked in till the Asian Cup. As long as we progress our style of play in the windows later this year, I don't mind it.

I think it's too soon to change him and expect the kind of changes we want. It would also look bad on the FA to sack him now considering they renewed him just before the WC.

My gripe is the language from the FA. I get they want to back him and show a united front, but the language is bad. Things like, "enormous success" and that Popovic lifted our standards, are very bad language. It presents that we are ok with mediocrity.

Milligan said it best, "These moments are hard to see. I don't like seeing them. I've lived those moments as well, and now we're seeing it again. When are we as a nation and as a federation well, decide who we are?

"When we qualify, is that just always going to be enough? What do we want moving forward?"

I have only just caught up with the post match review and comments from Milligan and Oar.

They touch on and use a lot of the language I have been. What's our identity? How will we evolve? Who do we want to be?

This was my favourite quote from Oar:

“I think the missing piece in the shorter term if you look at this team and how Popa should evolve the team moving forward, I don’t think we create enough opportunities to score goals by design. A lot of them are relying on individual moments of brilliance from Bos, Irnakunda, Toure in the front third, and expecting – I guess you could say – miracles from them to get past one or two players.

“There’s no repetition of us having a formula to break down opposition teams, and getting better at that formula. That’s something we need to work on.”

Anyone got any insights into Cabo Verde football philosophy, Technical Director, expectations of their FA, their football pyramid etc? They must have P&R? 😏
Apparently they have players from 14 countries, so I suspect they probably don’t worry much about their pyramid embracing a particular system of play at all levels.
Looks more like they just identify talented footballers and play the best football they can. I love that approach.

For some reason people treat losing a grand final as some huge negative. It is better to win, but the point is he makes the grand final. Which means he puts teams into the position to be successful. 10 years. Missed finals on two occasions. Two times premiers, one cup win, one continental win. 5 Grand finals.

They rode their luck in the final leg against Al Hilal. They were the best side in the comp. This was true Popa haramball. The rest of the competition was not.

By any measure he is successful and a perennial winner. He established WSW from nothing. And turned around both Perth and MVC. He did pretty much the same thing with the national team. There are enough things to look at critically. We don't need to make things up.

We got lucky playing the same way at the last world cup as well. It was a group with better teams then, and it was a group with better teams now. Again we can acknowledge the success while still being critical of aspects before deciding if it is right to move forward this way. We don't need to diminish what has been achieved to do this.
Good grief, Cs.. Wanderers the bestside in t ACL 12 years ago.?? I thought you said we didn't need to make stuff up? :)

Then that apparent FA lady on the panel cools it all down with corporate speak.

The Juric goal against Oman in 2015 was one where I thought 'Yeah now we have players working together to score' It really is tiresome that we're living on a prayer. Get some combinations going. 10 years ago we shot a lot too and that's where deflections and keeper scuffs come from.

I have to say I think we have progressed.

I just think maybe the old generation hasn't they still don't believe we good enough, too egotistical- we saw that when any criticism went the coaching staff way they took it as a personal attack.

The win against Turkey is in my opinion the greatest performance by the socceroos at a world cup, no one fucking no one thought we'd win and to do it with those goals was incredible and completely shattered Turkey's confidence but of course it goes to Poppas head and he's gotta change it for the next game to prove he's a tactical genius and fucked up big did the same fucking thing against Egypt and couldn't give Beach the spotlight.

Just not sure how you can call yourself a modern football manager playing that style. You have to be more flexible.

If we go local we should go with Trevor Morgan he coached half the squad already. He plays good football.

Yes, finally someone else who agrees with me re Morgan.

Often coaches with less of a name do well in international football. They have to time to study opponents and develop a long term plan instead of the quick club scene. Germany are interviewing Klopp in America right now and while there should be some success, I wonder how he'll go outside clubland.

Morgan is just a positive game style coach. I think it's the best time to have an attack minded coach as our defence is very good too offset a bit more exposure.

Mmm...alright, if we keep on with this style of football we will always be a mediocre team having to contend ourselves with being happy to get out of the group. Previous historical roo's teams have played a fast transitioning British style of football that surprised other teams by the aggressive defense and athletic counterattacks, not that we have to play that way. The overly defensive style, apart from being hard to watch, is a tactical dead end. If we do have ambitions to improve so that we go from being content with getting out of the group only as a pass, to getting to the round of 16 and beyond then we need to change how we play. We actually do have attacking minded players; Bos. Metcalf,Volparto, Irvine etc who have proven they can score or shoot with intent at international level, however the teams lack of attacking organisation, even set piece or corners, and reliance on individual brilliance e.g.both turkiye goals, is going to mean we will always struggle unless we change our philosophy from trying to not lose to trying to win. Some will say we don't have the players to do this, but then again Japan didn't either at one stage, or Belgium, or Serbia

Shame Mark Jackson didn’t stick around. With a pedigree that includes Leeds Academy and U/23s under Bielsa and the triple with a young CCM squad, he’d have been an interesting option.

From another thread

Bring in Arsène Wenger in his official capacity as FIFA’s Chief of Global Football Development to bypass domestic politics and fix the system.

Wenger’s actual mandate at FIFA is to audit national high-performance ecosystems and improve global coaching standards, Football Australia calling him in as an emergency consultant is the right move.

Tony Popovic is under heavy fire following the Round of 32 World Cup exit, and the AFC Asian Cup fast approaching in January 2027, so a replacement is very unlikely until after the Asian Cup. But Football Australia needs to be ready to move immediately after - first for the Technical Director. We don't want to be having the same conversation after the Asian Cup

Likely Technical Director profile

This is likely to be a master development mind — someone who has overseen elite academies in Europe or Japan (where Wenger coached and heavily influenced their modern system). Can we afford it? Can we afford not to?

Likely National Manager profile
Without wanting to put words into Arsene's advice the manger it is likely this is the profile he would recommend for the Manager
  1. Proactive Tactical Identity: A manager committed to high-tempo, possession-based, attacking football. He would veto defensive, reactive managers who rely on low-blocks and long balls.
  2. Track Record with Youth: Because Australia needs to transition to a new generation, the manager must have a proven history of blooding teenagers and trust them on the big stage, mirroring Wenger's famous Arsenal philosophies.
  3. International Tournament Pedigree: Someone holding a UEFA Pro Licence (ideally) or AFC Pro Licence with prior experience navigating the high-pressure environments of continental or World Cup tournaments.
Can we afford it? Can we afford not to?

Obviously the Technical Director role is the important one first up to identify the style of play, review/rewrite the national curriculum and ultimately choose or lead the team choosing the the national manager to match the style that is chosen to represent the 'Australian Way'.

Then we are in the right position to make an informed decision to move forward with Popovic or a new manager post Asian Cup

Well after my little rant I looked into the Arsene Wenger role and it seems he and or his team has been working with Football Australia since 2024.

...

All states and territories are actively participating in the core FIFA Talent Development Scheme (TDS), with frequent TDS Talent ID matches and centralized player tracking webforms running in every single jurisdiction across Australia.

However, when it comes to the highly critical next phase—the physical Football Australia Academy network—the states are intentionally moving at different speeds.

The implementation splits the country into three distinct tiers:

1. The Leading Pilot States (Fully Committed)

To get the physical high-performance hubs off the ground without waiting for slow-moving state bureaucracies, Football Australia launched a dedicated Academy pilot program with four key federations:

These four states have already integrated their youth squads directly into the unified national framework, combining the TDS talent tracking with national youth team pathways.

2. The Custom-Built State Systems

The heavyweights—Football NSW and Football Queensland run the TDS identification matches but operate their own pre-existing, massive academy networks (like the FQ Academy system). They are cooperating closely on data sharing and national scouting tournaments (such as the Emerging Championships), but they have too much local infrastructure to completely dismantle their current state setups overnight.

3. The Territoral Pipelines

Smaller entities like Capital Football (ACT) and Football Northern Territory are fully utilising the scheme to gain elite exposure. For example, national coaches regularly travel to Darwin and Alice Springs under the TDS banner to ensure regional players feed into the main state talent pools.

The Ultimate Mid-Term Goal

While the data collection is completely national right now, Football Australia's explicit strategy is to iron out the logistical kinks with the pilot group before initiating a compulsory national roll-out. This will eventually force all remaining states into an identical, strictly integrated high-performance blueprint.

The Next Step for Martin Kugeler and Heather Garriock

Since the operational pipelines, the databases, and the state-level TDS match structures are already in place, the infrastructure is completely ready.

The next move for the new executive board is simply to apply for a fully funded FIFA Talent Coach or High-Performance Specialist to sit at the top of this pyramid as the dedicated, permanent Technical Director. This would fill the gap left by the executive clean-out without costing the sport a single dollar of its domestic budget.

These placements are typically for 12-24 months before a handover to an identified candidate or an application for extension.

How’s that for irony, in light of the hissy-fits he threw in 2001* re. releasing his compatriot-charges at Arsenal to play for France against us in the Confeds Cup and friendly at the ‘G in which Muscat did a number on Dugarry

*to the effect of “I’ll never get involved in international-football bc it’s an inconvenience”

Constantly losing in a Grand Final is no achievement. 2 Major trophies in 10 years is also no major achievement.
It's four trophies.
Brisbane finish second and lose the grand final this year, no one could sit there and say with a straight face this wasn't a success.

That's a bad comparison. Obviously if Brisbane were to lose in the Grand Final it would be considered more of a positive because of their position the year before. So it would be progress. If they made the final again and lost, it wouldn't be considered progress. Popa though kept making the Grand Final and losing, so for him, the progress would have been to win, which he didn't.

No one really remembers the minor premiers sadly, hence why I said "major" trophies.

I can't believe coach trophies won here in this little closed league outpost stands as big badge of honour WC time.
Maybe harsh from me but its the reality.
Ancelotti has won some very very meaningful trophies globally, now I get that argument and he just got punted out.
As they say every dog has its day, Popa re Turkey.
Arnie had his ones - both play the game based on defence and a whim and prayer - I can just imagine the discussions pre games.
Dig in fellas, compress, close the holes, IF we can break out go for it.
I have never sat watching a game in confidence thinking we got this, let alone feel we're gonna get on the score sheet - how many have ?

All I know I'm sic of the same ol same ol the last 10+yrs......

Where's the D ? I'm waiting to read his wonderful analysis backing up popaball as he has since he took over.

If that's what you've taken from my posts you've mis-interpreted them. An Australian team needs to be aggressive and have some intent to attack and take the game up to the opponent. That can be achieved in different ways. With this team I'm suggesting aggressive and quick counter attacks. I haven't said anything about a flowing style.
Not from your posts, it was a rant aimed in general at a lot of others. Apologies for implying otherwise.
