Socceroos vs Egypt - 2026 World Cup R32 - Sat 4th of July 4am AEST

Ryan should have gone first. The most experienced, the freshest and has taken them before. He scores he boosts the team, he fails he gets 5 attempts to make some amends and take some pressure from the more inexperienced.
 
Firstly congrats to Egypt they were the better team today, they created the better chances and if it wasn’t for the feats of Patrick Beach’s great save towards the end we would have lost in normal time.

We got pinned back and our defence was under lot of pressure especially towards the end of the 90 and most of extra time.
We had shots but nothing to scare their keeper but we lacked a serious cutting edge. (No open play goals since the first game!)

In terms of penalties it’s the not the best way to lose but it’s part of football, if anything it’s the roles reversed from Peru 2022 but this time we lost.

The positive it’s a young team but it also needs to evolve especially on approach and tactics not only going into the Asian cup but also the next World Cup.

But what it shows me the Socceroos along with the Matilda’s is people care about football especially our national teams and how it matters to people so it’s very important the federation ask some serious questions where to next and not treat this is a 4 year event but something that could transform our sport.
The players have done their part, now it’s onto to the stakeholders of the sport to take us to the next level!

Completely agree with this. Although I'm an England fan I'm also an all round football fan. And I love the passion the Socceroos and of course the Matildas have ignited in Australia over the last few years and it proves how much the national teams matter as a unifying force.....

Regardless of success levels these football national teams have done the hard work of capturing hearts and minds (huge attendances, TV numbers, kids in green and gold).

Now it's on Football Australia to build some sustainable success, not just for the next World Cup and Asian Cup cycles but to try and make football a genuine top-tier sport here year-round. The players have shown what's possible, the system now needs to match that ambition...
 
Just a shocking level of incompetence here.

Swapping goalkeepers for a penalty shootout without telling them beforehand? Did Ryan even have time to study the Egyptian penalty takers? If I was Beach I certainly wouldn't want to be around the coaching staff after this.

Selecting centre backs who have never taken a single penalty in their careers to take 2 of the first 4 penalties? You don't send in kids like Herrington in these moments. This reminded me of when Southgate selected Saka to take the first penalty of his career in the Euro final against Italy and missed.

Not getting past Egypt is going to haunt these guys for a long time.

Egypt ran all over us at the end of the game and in extra time

it's part of the Popa bs about what a tough Taskmaster he is utter nonsense obviously

It looks like he spent more time doing fitness drills than training attacking patterns or set pieces.

Each team had 5 minute possession periods to refresh. Egypt had some fit players but also had a lot of cramping. Our fitness was reasonable but our disjointed player was an issue.
 
Lots of box scrambles and no one getting a shot away. Toure got no service and was slightly involved.

There were one or two moments were a better cross would've seen chances. That last second Toure touch should've been better. We just weren't clinical enough.
 
The Socceroos are getting annihilated online from other countries for the penalty shootout, swapping keepers how bad Ryan was and especially having two CBs take pens.

Also getting hammered for playing boring, cowardly defensive football, just like every other game we played too.
 
I'm just so gutted as Egypt was the team we wanted and they were beatable.

It was a much more conventional match. The Bos injury changed things but we had players capable of doing things. The subs felt a bit like the B grade selection but the disjointed play by some starters wasn't helping either.

Popovic got so much wrong and I don't think our team left their best effort out there.

The shoot out strategy kills me. Bringing in Ryan was worth a shot but in hindsight we see the result and also to think it was done on a whim by Popovic shows he makes it all about himself.

It hurts so much that we negligently threw it away. This is the worst of world cup knockout exits.
 
The news articles protecting Herrington aren't even needed. He had an excellent tournament.

Reports are the players were told when they were taking one so no volunteers.

Can we try again with Beach and Hrustic going first?
 
Woke up to the 4-2 penalty loss. Could have gone either way obviously, a good tough fought game.
Well done Egypt, I did enjoy their grit and respect the spirit they showed, despite the horrible officiating.
Popovic I feel just couldn't seem to foster any kind of confidence in these players.
First game was amazing. Second shocking. Third, okay, nothing fantastic.
We became way too comfortable at parking the bus and not giving a fuck.
Game turned ugly, no possession and plenty of errors
