Socceroos vs Egypt - 2026 World Cup R32 - Sat 4th of July 4am AEST

It was Japans B team!

Egypt, Paraguay and USA all went further than us. They are absolutely better teams

Today we couldnt capitalise on Salah being on one leg.
I strongly disagree that Egypt and Paraguay are better teams than us. USA is debatable, but I certainly don’t think the gap is as big as it looked in that first half. They just got lucky we had Popa as coach.

We won the Japan game.

Regardless of the skill and spring - someone taking penalties wants to see more open space around the keeper than not. It just adds a little more pressure when the keeper seems to loom in front of you.

Ryan looked tiny on camera and that must give a confidence boost to the penalty takers.

Doesn't make him a lesser penalty stopper but does limit the pressure on the taker - and penalties are so much about confidence in the shot rather than confidence as a keeper.
Sure yet keepers over two metres aren't saving them despite going the right way.

I think the taker should be wary of any keeper. If you pick your spot then you're somewhat of the way there.

🚨 Huge controversy surrounding Egypt!

In a shocking administrative error, Haitham Hassan was brought on as a substitute against Australia without completing the official switch of his sporting nationality from France to Egypt.

This could give Australia the right to file an official protest and potentially challenge the legality of the Real Oviedo winger’s participation.
Is this for real? If they fielded an ineligible player, can the result be overturned?

A lot of talk will be on the penalties and it’s understandable.

But everything after we scored up until the last kick of extra time is what needs to be put under the microscope.
Everything after we went a goal down needs the microscope.

Defending in our back quarter with only a single player at halfway when we were a goal down is exactly how Popa has managed previous games where we conceded. It is such a failure mindset and it produces the expected result more often than not.

If true, then the FA should go all out. Every other nation would. Yet I would say that missing a percentage windfall of Salah shirt sales that FIFA gets, would prevail over everything else.

Can someone please find out who in Popa's family Cammy Devlin hurt or pissed off or whatever cause that baffles me. Unless he's been injured, how does a DM coming off his best season for a team that conceded the least goals in the league and almost won the bloody thing not get a single minute
EVE has been asked to forward some of her photo collection to Devlin.

Should be in the side soon.

Egypt is the only one up for debate. Even more so cos we got an injured Salah.

The composure Paraguay played with against Germany and how they handled extra time and penalties is on another level to what we are capable of.

Saying they are lucky we have Popa is like telling Turkey lucky we had Beach.

We played 4 games and struggled to create scoring opportunities.

The US has scored 10 goals in 4 games, not even close.

Is this legit lol

I have tried to give Poppa the benefit of the doubt, especially after our strong performance against Turkey, but his subsequent team selections have been completely mind-boggling. It almost feels like he is trying to make a statement by deliberately going against the status quo.

Our best display against Turkey came when we utilized a traditional number 9 target man flanked by actual wingers. While I am a huge fan of Nestory, he is a natural winger, not a striker. Why on earth has he been played out of position as a number 9 in every single match since the Turkey game? Had Toure started this match, with Yengi replacing him later on, I genuinely believe we would have created far more attempts on goal.

Ultimately, Poppa's negative tactics cost us the best opportunity we have ever had to win a knockout match. His handling of dual nationals like Segacic and Triantis has been incredibly frustrating, and his tactical stubbornness has pushed my patience to new depths. He should be given the Asian Cup to prove himself, but anything less than a tournament victory, and I want a new coach in place for the 2030 cycle.

I don't think Popa trusts his passing. The popaball analysis posted here a few days ago underlines the importance of secure passing in Popa's system.

Ryan would never have reached the Uruguayan penalties that schwarzer saved. Particularly the second one.

Losing Bos was pivitol.. he is our best player and crucial to our chances.

We lack depth in this squad especially at wing back and even more so after Italiano went down.... So we were without both our wing backs which is the position we have the least depth...

We were really a pretty plodding team after Bos went out, we just didn't have the players to threaten them outside of using height in the box

I am not a popa fan but I don't think we can hang this loss on him
Except we did threaten in the period leading up to our equaliser and were on top. That happened after Bos was off. Then we went defensive again, subbed off Volpato and Irakunda and spent the next 45 minutes playing for penalties.
