in those times his comment was very viable, locals were not good enough to standard of our euro based players.
Black and white nothing more to elaborate.
Fact is its still got some credence today, where is the bulk/core of our Roos based today ? abroad.
Again, to what end? What did that comment actually achieve? Perhaps to sink the hopes of some players and to kick the A-league and discourage a few players who might have otherwise been working their arse off to get a call-up. Saying, I need the best and I believe the best are in Europe would have sufficed.

and would have been interpreted by some just the same - sinking some hopes - ofcourse, then some may have been inspired to work even harder.
Either ither.

Pim got the press he deserved because that hard luck story could have been a resounding success if he understood the Australian mentality, didn't shit the bed against Germany and wasn't such an egotistical arsehat.
A shame those senior players didn’t have the usual mentality of professionals ie “we do what the boss says”, and instead spat the dummy and played shite.
That was the shameful part.

He did say that training for average clubs in europe was better than playing in the A-league lol
Verbeek was specifically commenting on choosing Kennedy and Beauchamp whose clubs had had a 3 week break over a league players playing in the finals series. He stated that under those circumstances the Euro-based players would still be better prepared.

I respect others opinions.
I feel we keep appointing locals we get more the same but slightly different.
A capable outside gaffa learns of the confederation he agreed to walk into.
A new set of eyes and outlook would be refreshing and also lack of bias etc…..
Anyway won’t happen cause we oztralia and pay what the FA only wants provide.

The birthplace of the manager shouldn't matter. I didn't like it when we were one-eyed about Dutch managers post-Guus either.

Pim did kind of get us when the A-league was still very young, so there would have been a learning curve going on, and we were still building those foundations.

Didn't Yorke criticise Macarthur for being a Pub Team? I don't think we truly understand just how intense some European clubs can be.

The league took huge steps forward after Ange and Arnie and subsequently Popa, Aloisi, Muscat etc.

I blame Cahill. We played without him and 10 men for one half- but somehow our mentality would have done better than Argentina and England?

IMO that was the best German side I've seen in the past 25 years.

They put 4 goals past Messi and Maradona's Argentina. They also put 4 past a star-studded England team. They should have a penalty against tournament wiiners Spain as Ozil was pulled down in the box but no pen given.

Maybe a more pro-active approach form Verbeek would have satiated some of the fans. Or maybe not because that 4 could have been 6 or 7.

Did the players do that though? The only example I remember was a story that Les Murray reported about Lucas Neill rebelling in the dressing against Verbeeks tactics. Neill came out and refuted that as not true. Murray issued an apology.

There's no evidence the players spat the dummy I'm aware of.

To be fair to Pim, his record with us is not that terrible. 54% win rate is decent considering. However, his CV was never good enough to be given the role in the first place and progress us from what Guus did. If anything, he was probably the start of the downfall.

He benefitted from having some very good individual players who were able to take us out of trouble.

I'm not sure where the downfall was? We've made every World cup since & now has made it twice out of the group.

It's easy to say there was no downfall when you put it like that. But remember, there was a point where we dropped to 102 in the rankings in 2014. If that is not a downfall, I'm not sure what is.

We may have qualified for the events, but we didn't really do very well in them or have much success other than 2015 Ange Asia Cup. We've also made it out of the group stages 3 times now, but we should still be looking at how we perform and compete in these games.

What the late Pim Verbeek said about the a-league was a bit naive given it was only the 3rd ever season of the a-league, we tend to forget the Europeans and how they view their football is different and their landscape is very different to here so it would come as a bit of a shock for them.

Also Dutch people tend to be straight forward and direct with their opinions and communication so they are not always everyone's cup of tea lol.

I've no qualms with what Pim said tbh. If anything, we should have looked at it and gone, "Ok, what do we need to do to get to that point? What should we implement, improve. Who should we bring in?" We can still do that now. I've worked with 2 people in Football Queensland -in high positions - that get very defensive of criticism because they see it as personal attacks, so double down on what they are doing.
