If they where born her and followed the Socceroos like you are so sure of, they wouldn't need to come here from anywhere, they would already be here. Question is why leave AUSTRALIA so young if the dream is the Socceroos?
Lucas Bergvall left Sweden at 18 to move to England. Why did he leave Sweden so young if the dream he successfully fulfilled was to play for Sweden? Perhaps because the best leagues in the world were outside his country?

I doubt any player is going over to England thinking they’d make the Three Lions squad. Generally the good players already get capped for our youth teams while here anyway.

18 isn't young mate. And most of the Sweden squad plays in overseas leagues because the level of footballers they produce makes competition for spots on the national team that much harder to get... A good Aussie kid can play in the Aleague all their lives and get called up, they don't need to go overseas to earn a spot.

Realistically that wouldn’t be the case though. How many A-League players do YOU think are good enough for the Socceroos? Then look at their ages. Had we not have bias here there’s no way Mat Leckie would get picked, for example.

Also, they get paid more by overseas clubs. Why would they stay at home when they can get a bigger pay check overseas playing against the best players in the world?

Beggars cant be choosers. We only have one player in a top 5 league and he has only played 2 matches.

Circati/Bos/Metcalfe plus Volpato.
Metcalfe Must get away from his current club, must.
Irakunda/Souttar be nice they get to better clubs due to WC scouting currently fingers crossed.
They are worthy stepping up but likely bench first up.

Overall with Mono.

Bos a top player in Dutch league playing champions league as well. Possibly devlin at hearts as well is a stretch
The former - yes.

The latter - no.

I always list about 30-40 UEFA clubs as at least equal to the Big Five leagues, particularly middle and lower teams on the tables.

Portugal - Sporting, Benfica, Porto.
Eredivisie - PSV, Ajax, Feyenoorde.
Belgium - Anderlecht, Club Brugge, Standard Liege.
Scotland - Rangers, Celtic.
Swiss - Grasshoppers, Young Boys Bern, FC Zurich.
Croatia - Dinamo Zagreb, Hadjuk Split.
Serbia - Red Star Belgrade.
Greece - Patha ( could spell it!), AEK Athens, Olympiakos.
Denmark - FC Copenhagen.
Russia, Ukraine - before the war.

These clubs regularly play Champ League and Europa League intra-continental home and away games ( 6 per round), where there is so much riding on every game, analogous to World Cup and Asian Cup/Euro Champ scenarios. They have to play in foreign countries too.

Bos is playing big league football at Feyenoorde.

O'Neill was at SL.

Maybe Deg at Red Star too?

We missed popping the champaign over 500 members
Fantastic achievement!

I've seen few other G and G vets reflect the same view, but I'm loving all the new members expressing opinions on G and G.

We should all thank Pasquali for doing what he has. We would have no forum without him. I can still remember the day he offered on IS/442 to set up a new forum.

Moreover, Pas has selected some excellent Staff/Mods. He has assembled a good team.

We also have greater female participation, and they've brought something different to this forum, as women's football is more prominent. As soon as the W C is over, I'll become more active in the women's game section again.

I still look forward to the day where I meet Pas, shake his hand, pat him on the back, buy him a beer or coffee and give him a cash donation - that Ms Decentric doesn't know about!

Furthermore, G and G has vibrant Off Topic sections like Cricket, Rugby League, Bookreading, et al, plus possibly the most acrimonious and contentious - Politics.

Not sure this is the right section?

In the past Holger selected Matt McKay playing in the AL over the EPL's Brett Emerton for Asian Cup.

This time Popa, Foxe, Okon Sr, Jedi, Juric, have selected the AL's Okon Jr and Beach over Irvine ( Bundi) and Ryan ( Spanish league) respectively. Both have done well.

What is often missed by fans, is that national team coaches are constantly evaluating like for like in camp. They are far better at appraising players, relatively, than most overseas club coaches (many who have never coached international football) and the talent scouts who evaluate their suitability for UEFA football.

Moreover, Aus coaches are well trained relaive to UEFA generic coach education badges. Not long ago Spain, France, Germany and Netherlands, Italy too?, still had their national federation accreditation, which they deemed superior to generic UEFA badges.

Generic UEFA product is Tony G, former Matildas coach. Possibly a great woman manager, but an odd tactician.

Tony Gustavsson cannot do his job as a head coach properly though because in addition to being an odd tactician he makes questionable decisions regarding captaincy amongst other things.

Didn't realise there was controvery over Matildas' captaincy?

He has had Kerr and Catley. I thought the latter was the better choice.

It's more so as part of Tony Gustavsson's new role as Sweden women's head coach but definitely his tactical system contributed to the Matildas' disastrous campaign at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

He’s controversial in his player selections too. Picking an injured Kyah Simon for the World Cup and then not playing Clare Wheeler at all during the tournament was ridiculous.

Kyah Simon was only picked as part of the Matildas playing list for our Women's World Cup campaign on home soil because the assumption was that she'd be right but she ended up never getting game time.

And literally hardly any game time after that. Barely played at Mariners, didn’t play at all for Sydney, hardly plays for Dijon yet wants to be capped again. I’m a fan of Kyah but she needs to call it quits.
