Half time fact: Cape Verde is an archipelago of 10 volcanic islands (nine of which are inhabited by humans) in the Atlantic Ocean, about 570km off the coast of Africa. Having gained independence in 1975 from Portugal, its population of 500,000 and more than 1 million abroad is a unique blend of West African and Portuguese cultures. Their national music genre is a folk genre called morna, while cachupa (a slowly-cooked stew of corn, beans, cassava and meat such as fish) is the national dish. Despite its small size, it’s one of the most stable, free and tolerant African democracies, focusing heavily on its coastal tourism industry for the economy. The official language is Portuguese, though Cape Verdean Creole (Kriolu) is the primary language spoken. English and French are taught in schools and used in the tourism industry. Praia is the country's capital.

As for their national team, their nicknames are the Tubarões Azuis (the "Blue Sharks") and the Crioulos (the "Creoles"). While some of their players were indeed born in Cape Verde, others were born overseas, with the team including plays born in France, Ireland, the Netherlands, Portugal and the US. Cape Verde are at their maiden World Cup, but have played in four AFCONs. The men's national team have never lost by more than four goals, while the women's national team have only lost by five on one occasion.

This has been brought to you by the Capo Verde Tourist Authority dedicated to promoting the vibrancy of our culture all throughout the world. Don't forget to Like and Subscribe.

Macca’s should just sponsor the word “match” so the abbreviation is MM. M&Ms are a good chocolate brand that comes in a wrapper and Eminem (Marshall Mathers) is a good rapper. And football matches are good, while Macca’s is decent. Perfect!

Interesting story about Cape Verde’s Irishman, Pico Lopes (a CB for Shamrock Rovers). He was contacted in Portuguese on LinkedIn but he ignored the message since he didn’t speak Portuguese. He was later contacted again in English and took the opportunity to play for Kabu Verdi.

Darwin Núñez in a bit of a goal drought and got in trouble the minute he came on lol.
Darwin Nunez has failed to score in his last four matches for Uruguay and the last time he found the back of the net for either club or country was on the last matchday of the AFC Champions League Elite league phase in mid-February when he scored a brace for Al-Hilal against Al Wahda.
