World Cup 2026 Australia thread

Finishing 2nd also gives us much more rest as the game is on June 3 whereas 3rd is likely June 29.

Ryan had revealed Popovic said he had a gut feeling to play Beach. It was certainly correct.

Wonder if he had the same for our wingers yesterday?

They're not outsiders. There is not point making excuses for it, these people exist within every sport, but we have to acknowledge it when it happens.
Could be anyone. These events in town attract dickheads who want to start stuff or act tough. If they're affiliated with a club or fan group then some kind of ban would be appropriate too. Unfortunately people use the event to carry out their stupid behaviour.

If we finish as one of the eight best third-placed sides then we could get the winner of group K on July 4th also assuming that the teams from groups A, B, C, D, F, G, H and K make the eight.

Those combinations look improbable. Czech Rep or South Africa would need a win or starters and Scotland would need a result or small defeat.

Yes, looking at the current ranking of 3rd places - Bosnia is in the bottom 4 already, with many nations that have only played one game infront of them.

Looking at the combinations possible where Group B 3rd place is eliminated, but Group D 3rd place progresses (120 of the 495 combinations), 73 of them sees us play against the winner of Group E. 40 are against the winner of Group I, and 7 against the winner of Group K.

It's vital we finish 2nd. Probably Egypt then likely Argentina or maybe Uruguay. Imagine if Spain and Argentina face off!

That Ecuador Curaçao draw is a big bonus.

Group A and E look unlikely to have a 3rd place advancement and we'll know this before kick off.

Here's hoping A, C and E are already below us in a 3rd place hypothetical. B would be a bonus but I think Bosnia will beat Qatar. Ecuador could beat a rotated Germany. Curaçao beating Ivory Coast is less likely but a draw could happen.

Totally overlooked that Japan's group also finish before us so we'll even know where Sweden stand. 93% chance of advancing now but e'll find some way to diminish that.

Germany have won the group so this is already outdated. Germany have the overwhelming number of combinations if we finish 3rd.

2nd is vital. We get to rest a few more days, am easier opponent than Germany and we have Argentina, Uruguay or Spain next. Well, those teams may falter and end up elsewhere. A lot can happen. Argentina should be it but you never know.

The Guardian on Volpato: "Playing for Australia has also had an instant, personal impact on the man who grew up in Western Sydney but has been in Italy since 2020. “Walking out today, I was tearing up, it was amazing,” he said. “If I knew about this, I would have come [to play for Australia] a long time ago.” "

I'm pretty sure there's one of the third placed matches that we could be in that takes place the same day as the potential Australia v Iran/NZ/Egypt/Belgium game

These world cup daily vids are going to create some massive withdrawal symptoms. ESPN, 360, Roundball, Lachie talks is growing on me. Suited and Booted and then there's the official stuff and even some G&G stuff.

Very good point.

So that's 5 groups that play before us. I'm going through and working out what results in these groups are beneficial for us - should we find ourselves losing to Paraguay. Now, I'm doing these so that goal difference doesn't matter (eg, 3rd place finishes on 2pts or lower)

Group A
  • Czechia AND South Africa to both not win confirms us ahead of Group A
    • South Africa defeating South Korea coupled with Czechia failing to win MAY do the same - would be the same scenario I outline below with Curacao/Ivory Coast
Group B
  • Bosnia v Qatar draw confirms us ahead of Group B
Group C
  • Scotland loss MAY confirm us ahead of Group C. They have the same pts and GD as us (but one less goal scored).
Group E
  • Ecuador failing to win AND Curacao failing to win confirms us ahead of Group E
    • Curacao defeating Ivory Coast coupled with Ecuador failing to win MAY do the same - same boat as Scotland for Group C ALTHOUGH we have the same GD and Goals Scored as Ivory Coast
Group F
  • Sweden loss MAY confirm us ahead of Group C. They have the same pts and GD (although crucially, they've scored 6 goals to our 2 if we end up tied on GD with them)

How do you make time to listen to everything
I've got a lot of lesson planning to do on laptop so it provides good background noise. I can take most of it in. Also while cooking or washing the dishes. Take the tram 10min then I'll switch it on. Sure beats someone with a loudspeaker phone call on board.

The 2nd group matches will also give us a slightly clearer picture.

Off the top of my head Algeria Jordan facing off next is ideal as a draw will hopefully then mean neither will defeat Austria or Argentina.

I sense England's group will be a 9630 point total so hopefully Ghana suffer two heavy losses.

A lot of this won't happen and it's all very exciting.
