Socceroos vs Turkey 2026 World Cup match thread 🇦🇺🇹🇷

I agree, except all of us viewing at our watching venue thought he gave far too many decisions re fouls in Turkey’s favour.

Except we did quite well with goal kicks in our favour, which could have been corners to them.

Wonder what our experienced refs Muz, NicCarBel and Paul01 thought?
I did comment that to my friend while watching. A lot of little ones went Turkey's way.

I loved how composed we looked when Irvine and Behich came on. All that experience and leadership. Yengi looked to love it out there. Velupillay didn't do too much but I'll have to watch again. Geria covered his area wonderfully.

And man it feels GOOD to have some options off the bench. Irvine and Behich coming on in that final stint? I felt so relieved knowing we had such experienced and great servants of the socceroos to see out the match and help calm down the team.

We still have Volpato who will definitely get minutes as we try to balance out the players and keep legs fresh. What a great option to have last minute. Herrington incase one of our big three have to go off. Great option. Big target man Yengi. We got Cammy Devlin ready. Leckie and Mabil, good options to have as well for later and big game experience.

Man i am just buzzing. On top of the world. Feel like we really can go for a great run.

And the best part? As Tony said in his post match presser. This team is NOWHERE near it's ceiling. That is 4 to 8 years away!
I'm not putting any limits on what this team might achieve in this tournament. Who ever thought Leicester could win the EPL, after all. The confidence will be surging through the team and infecting the whole squad, with the younger players benefitting most. With the power of belief, dragons can be slayed. A win over the U.S. would be huge. I really hope Toure is the one who scores next. I think he needs it.

I want to support Turkiye and wish them success in their remaining games because I think the game was played in a good spirit (and I've travelled there and loved it), but the post-match comments by Guler and Calhanoglu are disrespectful. To be blaming the refs where VAR is scrutinising everything and to be saying that they were dominant glosses over the fact that this was a perfectly executed defensive master-class by Australia, where they were out-coached and we scored two very fine goals in open play. We didn't score because we were big or physical. We sliced open their defence and punished them. They'll be hurting after losing a match that 68 million people expected them to win, after a 24 year absence. But please, a little grace and respect.
Indeed. Pathetic and baseless blame-shifting by Guler.

Do a shot instead and you'd be in hospital with alcohol poisoning. Bottoms up.
Stomach stress from kick off had me with zero appetite. Irankunda calmed it a bit but potentially losing the lead got immensely stressful.

When Metcalfe score I was going mental and then looked at the clock and felt it was really that close. Final 15 was stressful but from around 85 we seemed assured.

A had a BBQ at a mates and he was asking me why I wasn't eating more. I had no appetite.

Hat off to Popovic and the team. That game plan was perfectly executed. Perhaps better than any other time in Popovic's tenure.

I thought Popovic had lost the plot picking Beach and Okon. He was vindicated.

I really worried that the step up from AL to WC football would be a step too far for Okon. But he bossed a world class midfield. He was excellent man-on-man against Guler. That pass phhhhwoarrrrr! It's why he was picked but to execute!

Beach must feel like he's in outter space right now.

Irankunda holy shit! The mentality of that kid he just wants to win. That touch was so much class and the near side finish ballsy and skillful.

Toure had the Turkish defenders shitting themselves and he wasn't even at his best.

Metcalfe was so important connecting and playing between the lines. I love that when he pounced on Turkiyes mistake and they sat off him that he drove at them and didn't hesitate to take what they gave him. Shoulda showed respect.

Popovic's subs were perfect. Italiano was stoic down that right defence but its a tough gig getting targeted by players the calibre of Yildiz and Yilmaz for 90'. Geria to defend was the correct call. Irvine to bring energy. Yengi to monster and stress their defence, what a unit.

Then our defence. Souttar, Burgess, Circati with O'Neill screening gave no quarter. Turkiye hitting long balls at Akturkoglu was them out of ideas and panicking.

So many good moments. Okons turns, tackles, passes. Bos sitting his man on his arse with tricky footwork. The goals. That Beach save from Calhanoglu's drive.

It was beautiful to watch. Credit to the boys. What a game. What a night. Mentality monsters.
I think spot off to Popovic, how brave is he, if Beach made a mistake & let in a goal & Okon played poorly, he would've been crucified.

Poppa's game plan is not pretty football, but we don't have players to play pretty football, when we fail, Poppa looks like an idiot, when it works, he's a legend.
We all wanted Robertson, as he is our best technical midfielder, but Poppa has realised our best chance is Okon, O'Neill & Irvine, who bring energy & non stop running, Okon, is a beast & has been for SFC, as far as his non stop running.

Shame we don't have a Mooy, that can slow the game down a bit & give us a bit of possession.

But hats off to Poppa, not his biggest fan, but gotta respect that side he put out, my first comment was 'can you sack a manager mid tournament'?

Yes, courageous by Popa. As you say, he would have been crucified if it had gone wrong.

I didn’t think they would thrash us, but be good in attack and midfield, like they were.

I thought the Turkish captain was a fool to enunciate they would dominate Aus. Nothing like it to motivate opponents!

None of Turkey have any previous WC experience- and the biggest stage. Having said that, given the cattle they currently have and the past quality of the Turkish league, they should have qualified for a lot more WCs. They must be mentally fragile, like they were today. Turkey in terms of football talent, is a far better current team than the UEFA Scotland and Czech teams in this WC.

Aus is a battle hardened World Cup team, having qualified for 6 WCs in a row, which only 10-11 teams globally have done.

Asia was the toughest qualification campaign this time we have ever had. However, Aus only had Souttar starting as a WC veteran.

Souttar’s life has changed. From not being selected by Scotland, he has ended up captaining Australia at the World Cup, with a whizz domestic generation emerging. Scotland can have Aussie Lyndon Dykes instead.
Yeah & throw in Segecic & Triantis, enjoy yourselves, while we experience a new generation coming thru.
