Socceroos vs Turkey 2026 World Cup match thread 🇦🇺🇹🇷

I've read a lot of comments about how we parked the bus. I don't really get it? That's football we defended well and took our chances.

How's that a bad thing?
We also scored twice, on both occasions from open play. That’s the antithesis of parking the bus. We defended well, but we also attacked well.

It says "Australia's slowest player:"

We do produce some pretty fast athletes, they just don’t always become sprinters hence why we aren’t known for our sprinting (with exceptions such as Cathy Freeman and Gout Gout). The athletics championships always have some really fast kids too.

Both times the Socceroos scored from open play were from the counter attack which stemmed from parking the bus and forcing the Turkish forward line towards the box before our tall centre backs blocked their shots at goal and subsequently progressed the ball downfield though.

Hmm interesting to see how highly rated the Turkish midfield was.

Bos the lowest with Toure is accurate. It's a stat ticker so even little errors cost you.

There was that one moment around 64min where Bos got the ball after a massive scramble and Velupilliay ran ahead and away and they took it back. Also Velupillay was apparently asleep for the Celik side chance. That was a big opening.

10s are extremely rare on Sofascore. They happen, but are extremely rare and I don’t think I’ve ever seen one given to a goalie.
There hasn't been a goalkeeper in the A-League Men who's been given a perfect ten on Sofascore this season but Teresa Morrissey managed to post a perfect ten in the Dub back in January.

This just reeks Moneyball to me. Everyone puts all these ridiculous values on things when it's his job to keep the ball out of the net.
That is only part of his job - if you constantly turn the ball over then you are continually under pressure - i.e more chances to concede. That said - this is at a World Cup against a highly rated opponent so I'm sure a clean sheet in a World Cup debut and a win is more important to him than his rating.

What happened?
Long story short there’s a thread citing an article from The Guardian that talked about the Socceroos and PFA’s video on multiculturalism. Now, obviously knowing Reddit and The Guardian they spin this as political and supportive of their causes, while I pointed out that Sky News would consider it supportive of their causes because it shows blokes (many of whom are fairly to ridiculously conservative) being proud of Australia.

Now, everyone one else on the thread was super political, trying to spin a fairly apolitical video about our national sports team into their agenda of supporting uncontrolled mass immigration and progressivism. I pointed out that so many progressives would be angry that they’re proud of their country, since many modern leftists don’t support patriotism. That’s where shit got out of hand. I also pointed out real facts, such as the issues faced by French Guiana, our immigration stats, our cost of living and crime crises, etc.

Mind you I’m also not even as conservative as they think. I’ve made plenty of pro-queer, pro-woman, pro-diversity comments on there too. Furthermore, the other users were not banned and users who’ve posted FAR worse stuff (including now-deleted photos of Jews being hung dead and claiming that all Sydney United fans support that) have not been banned either. It’s so authoritarian.

Irankunda's goal tally is increasing fast. When he gets to a point where he starts every game he is going to dominate the scoresheet. Next Asian Cup and qualification period, watch out.

I still believe he has more goals in him this World Cup. Waiting for that outside of the box banger.

Crazy stat, back in 2006 across the 3 group stage games we faced 38 shots at goal in total, today after one game in this wc we are sitting on 28. We need to somehow try cut that number at least in half against the US.

My only comment on the matter as to keep politics low. I've seen so many posts the last days about migration and diversity of the Socceroos. Yeah, brilliant, most of us have something like that in our family history too.

The video is great as the players celebrate their families while the tone of the posting page is trying to rub it in the nose of anyone who wants to question sensible migration policy.

Stupid stuff post game now about One Nation supporters won't be liking Iraunkunda when got a vast majority that simply isn't the case. It's about assimilation and these blokes are all great and not dickheads.

If you want to dress up as a roadman, rob with a machete or pick up terrorists from an airport and claim you now own Australia then you can fuck off.

These people aren't worth the time. They stink, don't shower, think everything should be handed to them, overvalue some stupid service or art they've created all while wanting to dismantle capitalism with a Macbook and $9 iced coffee.
