1998 - Brazil was eliminated by France
1986 - West Germany was eliminated by Argentina
1982 - Argentina was eliminated by Italy (if we are counting second group stage)
1962 - England was eliminated by Brazil

Wow so it’s happened in the last 3 tournaments, but before that had only happened 4 times.

Obviously in the first few editions it didn’t happen because nations were electing not to take part. First time it could have happened would have been 1934 beating the 1938 champions, but Italy won both. After that, the next time it could have happened (eg, both nations had taken part) was 1954 beating the 1958 champions (which didn’t eventuate)
 
The Socceroos often have played against eventual winners,finalists and semifinalists.
1974-in group with W Germany,E Germany and Chile.W Germany won the Cup
2006.Played Italy ,eventual winners,in R16
2010 Germany,semifinalist was in our group.
2014 Netherlands who was a semifinalist was in our group
2018 France ,winners of the Cup,in our group
2022France ,beaten finalist,was in our group and Argentina ,the WC winner,beat us in R16

Saying a team got "eliminated" from a World Cup final is diabolical mate.
