2026 World Cup Squad

With Robertson omitted and several recent national team defections — developments I believe many fans are deeply unhappy about — Popovic has placed significant pressure on himself. If Australia fail to progress from the group, his position should come under serious scrutiny. Longer term, I fear the team will be weaker as a result of what I see as a series of baffling decisions.
When I look at the current squad - the defence was built by Arnold, the attack by Veart and Popovic has bastardised the midfield. I still think we can get out of the group but further progression depends on the position.

Jason Geria out of those. He's not a bad player and I think he could do better but he's currently playing in the J2 League. Ideally our squad should all be playing consistently well at the highest level possible (meaning Max Balard, Dan Bennie, Alex Robertson, Zac Sapsford and Ante Šuto should all have been included in the final squad).
Alex Robertson definitely should have been included in the final playing list for the Socceroos given his remarkable form for Cardiff City this season in addition to the fact that he ranks highly in chance creation so will be good at progressing the ball downfield as a playmaker.

The last two are both much older than Mo Touré so there's a good chance he comes close or even surpasses them in the future.

This season he is an above average player on a mid table team in Eerste division.
He could be underrated, get picked and do really well. But it isn't baffling and it isn't a Popa thing. A selection from this team, in this league would be a surprise.
Popa watched Nizzy dismantle his Victory team in the second half of the AL GF three seasons ago. The same season he was Johnny Warren medalist and led the Mariners to a treble including an Asian trophy. He had just been picked a couple of times by Arnie and immediately changed the game when he came on against (I think) Indonesia.

He's playing in those lesser leagues because he's had to prove the doubters wrong (regarding his height) his entire career - but the OS doubters can be forgiven as they'd not seen first hand what he's capable of - especially with other decent players around him.

Popa has, and the fact he's not featured in any team under Popa is a national disgrace.

CRISTIAN FUCKING VOLPATO IS IN THE TRAIN-ON SQUAD WTFFF
Football Australia has lodged all the necessary paperwork to FIFA and received a release letter from the Italian federation, which means now we just play the waiting game for Volpato to jump ship and lock him in to the green and gold jersey for life.
