A League franchise competition v Big Bash franchise competition?

Which franchise competition wins the hearts of minds of Australia's summer sports season?

Even though in my young trying to be an aussie racist days I actually played cricket for a couple of seasons, despite being a ok allrounder I figured - "fark" standing round a nice summers day all frigging arvo, beach was my go to.
Now re the kids, call me a bully Papa, boys when small, neither of you is having me hanging around a friggin cricket field through the summer, NO cricket we are not skips/convicts - we go to the beach with our Mamma's nicely cut fresh sandwichs and enjoy drowning between the flags or run over fellow swimmers with the surf mats wave after wave :), heaps more fun, otherwise its football football football thats our sport :) summer small sided/6aside if need that they did.
 
The BIG Bash have it complately nailed for the short duration it's on. Prime time tv and they make it a great night out of entertainmamt for the families....

Obviously no true cricket fan takes it seriously but then no true chef takes Masterchef seriously and it's the highest rating tv cooking show in Australia.

The A League franchise competition should be front and centre of every sports fans interest in the months between the end of the traditional football codes season and the start of the new one. That's the whole idea of playing it in the spring/summer when the traditional football codes have closed shop...

But along comes some pyjama based game of nonsense in December and drives a big spoke through the A League franchise competition's wheel....

So BBL is entertaining but means nothing, vs A-League which means something but not as entertaining. And APL say they're in the entertainment business...

I've mentioned it for ages, and it gets me fired up. But the product on the screen oftens suffers. Enemy number one, feigning injury. Just drag their carcass off the pitch and get on with it! Unless there's a broken bone or concussion... we need to take a leaf from AFL here. If a player goes down and play stops, keep them off the pitch for 10 minutes, make them really hurt! Goalkeepers too, zero tolerance! We should not be stopping matches for the unfit, poorly managed or poorly coached teams. Pissweak. I get crap from traditionalists about it, but it's a blight on the game, and the sport/players comes across as a bunch of pansies. We're stopping matches for pickel juice ffs. It kills it. Optics, people! I don't accept the "it's tactical" argument, it just adds to the bad sportmanship optics, like bowling underarm. Harden up! It's meant to be a war of attrition. One of my enduring memories is a banged up and bleeding Lawrence Thomas keeping an epic cleansheet in the 17-18 Grand Final.

Enforce the keepers restarting play quickly! None of this walking around looking for a second ball, grabbing a drink, cleaning the boots, having a stretch on the crossbar, bringing the defence in, nope pushing them up instead... ffs. Get on with it! Optics! Stop giving casuals an excuse to nap!

And as much as I love Simon Hill for the big matches, he really drags his feet for the bread and butter matches. You need someone like Teo or Robbie calling those, keep it upbeat and exciting, plenty of back and forth and banter. Again, look at the AFL and cricket world. Test matches are a great example, hardly a quiet moment despite the often dour matchplay. Richie Benaud was my favourite, really only spoke when necessary, but he's probably the exception not the rule and times/audience have changed, it's the ADHD generation.

Make it an audio/visual feast. Up the colour saturation and lighting. Zoom in! Plenty of closeups of the skills, the struggles, the passion, the drama etc. Stats coming out your arse. Overlays. Stories. Really amp-up the crowd mics. Might help the casuals if that's what they expect these days to stick around a bit longer, there's only so much entertainment on the pitch for them. Most of our competition funding comes from the broadcasters. The broadcasters need a good TV product for the casuals to be interested. Casuals often just don't understand the game enough and need other things to keep them attentive.

Look I get where your coming from the Aussie perspective and that is a very good point that springs in my head.
NO, I don't want to see our normal game "downfalls" "frowned upon" what the typical aussie sees our game as (this goes back to the sissy game we've been percieved as here ), they for one are not football people in any case.
They will turn up to the derbies for the "show" like the general body going to a GF, me for eg have never gone to a NRL finals game at all, why for I really don't care about the game but on tv.
We are not going to convince in time general people to become devoted week by week footbal supporters.
They are the wrong fish.
There are heaps of invested football people/families in NPL/NST/Club level land that neglect the AL/APL, these are the true football supporters to fed on but its excluded, we're outliers down there.
Thats my take my friend.

Agree with you too mate. My post wasn't a one thing to fix all, nothing can do that. It's just making it more appealing to a broader audience, and I don't think would be at the expense of anyone else. We still need to appeal to football people too.

It’s why I’ve come to believe we should stop appealing to ‘casuals’ altogether(definitely the ones from non-⚽️ backgrounds, in any case) and get our sh1t together first before thinking about converting anyone.

But the bottom-line is, this league has from day 1 been run largely for casuals, and oftentimes BY casuals..💡
