Graham Arnold's Iraq thread

Its interesting Arnies turn around.......
There he was burnt out managing our Roos - done well no doubt about that Qatar result wise.
Post Qatar everything went down hill and you wonder why actually for nothing much had changed, why did we not carry on post Qatar.
Then he gets the Iraq post that sure wouldn't have been easy to learn and work with incl imo even more pressure.
Really happy for him he deserves this badge of honour thats for sure.

It's interesting how calendars dictate life. People do so well at one thing and then the next cycle starts and it all crumbles. Was it holiday? bad new ideas? or just the fact that people get this block in their head and things either improve or crumble once the slate is clean?

Arnold really worried me after the Saudi away game where the crazy talk started and he was very dazed. He went away and regathered and got us to a world cup and then some. Wayne Bennet asked him if he could squeeze anything more out of us after Indonesia away and the answer was no.

Don't think it's fair for him to take someone's spot who was there during qualification
Unfortunately squads are tough to pick and require tough decisions to be made. Those decisions make dreams come true for some and break the hearts of others. Ali Auglah from CCM is also possibly gonna be picked despite having never played for Iraq before.

It's a interesting discussion I'll argue you might get a better player yes but it could ruin the morale of the team

Yeah I get what you’re saying. It’s part of why I strongly emphasise capping players as soon as possible instead of waiting till a tournament comes by. It also helps integrate them into the team. For example I reckon Suriname woulda got to the World Cup instead of DR Congo had they got players like Joël Piroe quicker. Curaçao on the other hand qualified because they did it quickly (only missing out on Quilindschy Hartman who has five caps for the Netherlands but coulda easily made Curaçao’s squad and was going to in 2022 but Feyenoord didn’t let him go on international duty).

But the players have to want to play like volpato perfect example. If he said tomorrow I want to play for the SOCCEROOS in the world cup. It's like no where were you months ago like getting your P's and everyone is your friend

Different case. They probably haven’t approached him before and maybe Finland told him at the time that they wanted him. We’ve been tryna get Cristian Volpato since 2021.

There should be a rule that you can't play at a world cup if you switch nations once qualifying is completed. This would get FAs organised and stop these last minute circuses. A manager with principles wouldn't pick such players either.

So we can’t pick Ante Šuto this time then? Though he technically didn’t switch since he had never played an international match before.
