Official South Melbourne Hellas thread 🔵⚪

Our last leaders group match is on the 12th and the semi is on the 20th. Would the team come back for 8 days between games or just stay?

I also think if we dont pick up maximum points in the next 2 npl matches we probably wont be making finals as 3 losses in May are guaranteed.

The only way to sneak a strongish team into a May npl match is to shift the George Cross match from Sundsy the 18th to Friday the 16th. That would be doable. I suspect the team aint coming back though.

I can sort of handle the heidelberg away loss because that would be a difficult match even for our best team but we would smoke George Cross and Avondale at home, its a shame we have to bin those points.

I can see the team staying in Auckland for most of the month of May. The good thing is that the conditions will familiar to us, so we wont be struggling under the humidity and heat of the South Pacific. I would be interested to see whether it would even be cheaper for the club to stay in Auckland rather than keep flying back and forth. It may also give the players an opportunity to have a mini-break for 2-3 days to rest and do some sightseeing/group activities to keep them physically and mentally refreshed. We need to provide these players multiple breaks to avoid burn out and injuries.

The Heidelberg and Avondale matches will be sacrificed. They are certain losses. It is the George Cross match that could be interesting. Depending on who stays back, we might get away with this one like we have against Green Gully and Altona Magic. Players like O'Sullivan, Dovison, Papadimitriou, Angelatos, Saristavros are stepping up. We saw good signs from the U20 goalkeeper Van Riet too. I would keep Pope and Lackay back in Melbourne.

Even with the above said, we need 6 points from the St Albans and Melbourne City Youth matches. We also have Hume City on May 30th. That would also need to be a must win match as well. If we are still in the top 5 by the end of May, we should be OK to finish in the top 3 of the ladder by the end of the regular home and away season.

Love to see this !

Yeah makes you proud to see the club representing not only Australia but US this way...

All the more reason why we should focus really heavily on Australia Cup this year.. Imagine 2027 being the year South Melbourne Hellas is competing in three confederations at the same time (and still too effnikz to be in the Aleague).

If you really want to make a significant statement to Australian football, then we go out and win the Australia Cup. Be the first non-A League team to win it. Collect the $50K winners cheque on Channel 10 in prime time TV.

Then we would qualify for the AFC Champions League Two competition. Interesting to see how much of the prize money we could collect, and whether it will need to be shared with Football Australia/other A League clubs.

In this situation it wouldnt be just the AL clubs you will have to beat but a whole establishment behind them, lets not kid ourselves... South winning it would be the biggest 'faux pas' the APL could ever imagine and their biggest nightmare i am sure...... especially their local rep franchise congloms who already have heart pulps at the idea of pro rel (the argument for whome would them become more real than ever)...

If bergers thought reffing in last years gf was biased can you imagine what we would come up against?..

Australia cup is difficult, you need a good draw imo. I think we can beat anyone at Lakeside. Heidelberg stayed at home for its entire campaign last season and that was a big factor in how far they werent.
Of course it is, pie in the sky stuff, but it would still be hilarious though, playing in Oceania and Asia and constantly explaining to these confederations that we are "too Greek" to play in Australia. hahahahaha

Im paying 100 little kids to fly 100 drones over Lakeside during the final with flags saying "Fuck the Aleague".. I hope the club gives me some of the prizemoney if we do win... HAHAHAHAHAHAAHH

Astro Sakalis you reckon eh?

Just adding to bergers cup run last year. I saw all those games against the A league teams live. Truth be told the hardest game they played in that period was us in the dockerty cup final.

I dont know what the schedule will be this time around but i'd gladly take A league teams from the get go if most of it is played in August again.

You'd definately prefer to play a wsw, wellington etc over heidelberg, sydney united, marconi (potentially away) etc.

Heidelberg would have been far more vulnerable last year facing npl teams.

Maybe it would be better to play the Bergers in the final of the Australia Cup ... at least we have form. hahahahahahaha
