The development gap holding Australian football back

Wrote an article on what I would consider to be the development gap - where Australian players stagnate between 16-19 years old.

Read it here: https://open.substack.com/pub/aussi...m_campaign=post-expanded-share&utm_medium=web

Let me know your thoughts!
Excellent analysis and a good read as well. While we all can debate the validity or otherwise of the points you raised (and on first read I think all or most are very valid), a detailed and brutally honest analysis of all points by each A League club (and many NPL clubs) about how those points apply to themselves would be a good starting point for thinking about how they could improve young player development.

I just read it, excellent work mate well thought out. (y)

I think this has been mentioned before in various circles but clearly 16 and below we on par with the world but after that things fall down.

For context our best young talent right now, 3 of them have represented Italy (now we got Circati) and Irankunda who left at 18 to go to Bayern Munich got their development done here either by leaving before 18 if they have a Euro passport or played in the a-league before going at 18 like Irankunda and recently Herrington as well abet at the MLS but its a higher level than the a-league and closer to the top 5 leagues.

Jordan Bos is a special talent who is at Feyenoord but otherwise if players leave to Europe when they are around 21-22 its seems its kind of too late for the elite European levels otherwise they land up in lower tiers where they struggle with the physical intensity which the players make comments on.

So something needs to be done that's for sure.

well K66 - isn't that just as scout aus quotes give young 16/19yrs more a go at Snr level to test and develop them further ?
As he mentioned re the GG, Dukes was front lining for MK 18 and under ripping it and making the name for himself.
Good time spent on research and written scout_aus and welcome.

as mentioned we've discussed many a time some of us here and back in 442.
Then we have others against saying keep gaining experience here !
Says it all whats the right move - kept saying, if your promising enough, get out of here sooner not later !
They moan about Volpato and other 2 - throw in Irakunda getting away to learn/develop more look at him each time he plays for the Roos now and Bos !

Either leave before 18 if you have a passport, or the teams have the balls to play a 15/16 year old and give them the experience and then sell them at 18/19, it's probably our best bet right now.

I fully agree, it’s about giving 16-19 yo a go. But to do this various other decisions may need to be made or philosophies followed. Such as deciding not to sign as many visa players, being prepared to tolerate initial underperformance compared to a more experienced player, being prepared to maybe not put 100% emphasis on short term results, etc among the other points that Aussie_Scout mentioned.

Great article. I think the solution to the problem is more games. If we have more games, coaches have to depend on their whole squad and not just the first 15 players. If we look at the football season in Australia, the longest season is NSW with 30 rounds. We have cup games and some ACL games. In Europe, they have 34+ league games, two domestic cup competitions and more clubs playing continental football.
