Official South Melbourne Hellas thread 🔵⚪

A great day for South Melbourne football today with both our men's and women's teams getting the job done 3-0 against Preston Lions and Alamein respectively in NPL Victoria, and former Hellas product Leticia McKenna also making her Matildas debut.
South under 23s defeated Preston 1-3...

It was a tight first half where it really was an arm wrestle. At halftime it would have seemed a safe bet that the match would have ended in a scoreless draw. But we turned it on in the second half.

Some things went our way. Eliopoulos nearly turned the ball into his own net late in the match. That penalty decision where Giannakopoulos got the ball could have gone against us.

But take away nothing from the team. It was a great performance in the second half. Pasquali and Giannakopoulos were huge again, along with the defence. They repelled all attacks. Bonada being used in the striker position was perfect. He held the ball up well and was ready to get physical with opposition players. Was much more agile than Swibel.

Who would have thought Dovison would pop up with a great goal. He was quiet in the first half, but he left his mark early on in the second half.

Special mention to O’Sullivan. He did well today and has really stepped up this year. This has provided another valuable option in the backline.

We still sit on top of the ladder and now have a 4 point lead. Not sure how long this will last given we have OFC Pro League commitments over the next 6 weeks.

With the players who didn't play today vs Preston seems the squad will be:
Charleston, Trenkov, painter-andrews, Burchmore, inglese, coveny, skapoulas, meneleu, Leech, pope, messarouni, cocks, swibel, Lackay, Singh.

15 Sinisa was flying out tonight so will be there then some of the other senior players will fly out tomorrow or Monday also

We’ll have a competitive team against Auckland. Let’s hope they can hold on for a draw at least.

In terms of the Oakleigh match next week, we should keep Lopez and Bonada in Melbourne to add some quality to the team.

I would guess some players like Leech, Menelaou, Inglese, and Cocks flying back to Melbourne for that Oakleigh match at least. It will be a makeshift squad next week.

Possibly giving those pricks a walk in the park outing next week is giving me hives, couldnt stand seeing them benefit from a championship appearence...... fckn bergers cant get their act together to stay above them either atm isnt helping... somewhat petty perhaps but i really wont like dropping points here, even if i can understand why we may have to...

If you cant beat them bring in some leg breakers and leave a semi permenent dent would be my play.... lol

Auckland FC reserves ended up defeating 10-man South Melbourne 3-2 in their OFC Pro League circuit 5 opening game after Ronan Wynne scored the match winning goal in the 84th minute, with Charlie Leech being sent off for a second yellow card in the 77th minute.

There’s a lot to unpack from today’s match against Auckland.

Firstly, our Starting XI was as expected. I was surprised that we had such a thin bench with only 2 outfield players. Apart from the first ten minutes of the first half, we actually played well and took a deserved first half lead. That first ten minutes in the first half was just awful from South. We were just shell shocked by that early goal after 23 seconds. Special call out to Swibel who held the ball well and created the opportunity for Leech to bury that goal and gives us the lead.

For some reason, we came out in the second half the same way we did as we started the first half. Auckland took the initiative and appplied tremendous pressure on the undermanned South team.

Problem was that we lacked a bench to freshen our team. Auckland made full use of their bench and brought on fresh legs to search for that third goal. We brought on Lackay, to play in Right Back shifted Painter-Andrews to Centre Back.

You could see the South players were suffering in the last 15 minutes. The red card could be argued changed the balance of the contest against us. With a team lacking significant quality, suffering from the humidity and down to 10 men, it was always going to be a struggle to hold on that 2-2 scoreline.

That Auckland third goal can only be described as comical and farcical. Our defending was practically nonexistent. You can’t give away such goals. At the end of the day, two poorly defended situations gave the win to Auckland.

I have to be fair and say that the team toiled and worked hard to be leading 2-1 with about half an hour left. Players like Inglese, Coveny, Menelaou, Pope, and Cocks didn’t stop running all day.

The quality of refereeing today was poor. That free kick called on Cocks in the second half was laughable, and stunned he missed that corner that Coveny had correctly won at the end of the first half. Sometimes the referee decisions just don’t go your way.

A full strength Starting XI would have won today.
