Australian Dual Nationals 🇦🇺🏳️

I’m talking about posts like this:

If we get a player the Socceroos/Matildas could post on their social pages stuff like this.

I’ve seen them do it the other way round too - I’m pretty sure Tonga did a congratulations post for Tyra Bagiante when she switched from Tonga to play for the Young Matildas

Tonga will be hoping Tyra Bagiante is either really good or doesn’t get permanently tied to Australia because even merely an A-League player would be phenomenal for them. Similarly Angelo Fulgini and Josh Sotirio are phenomenal for New Caledonia.

Sotirio hasn’t been called up to their recent squads for some reason

I'm trying to remember the rules that we decided were accurate - any football, at any level after a switch locks in, yeah?

Tyra has definitely played Junior Matildas since in Asian Cup qualifiers - although the kicker is, she played in a match against Northern Mariana Islands (AFC member, but not a FIFA member), and then was an unused substitute against Singapore - so... I'm not 100% sure if the first match locks her in?

Injured I think. Or a passport issue? I doubt they’d just leave him out, he’s one of only a few Cagous playing top flight football outside New Cal.

We really need that FIFA guy back lol.

Tyra Bagiante has been named in the Junior Matildas playing list for the under-17 Women's Asian Cup but was not in the matchday squad altogether for the qualifier against Singapore so you'd think she'll be locked in to the green and gold already.

I think more likely it'll be a passport issue for Josh Sotirio because he managed to play a full match for Hougang United in the Singapore Premier League this week and in the last set of fixtures before the March international window.

Well, that’s what I mean - FIFA don’t count an appearance until you’ve actually been on the field. That’s why the Marianas Islands match was interesting as they aren’t a FIFA member, so I’m not sure if it’s official. Otherwise it will be if she gets game time during the Asian Cup

It should be considered official for purposes of locking a player to an association, given that it was part of qualification for an AFC major tournament and the Northern Mariana Islands are still full AFC members despite not being members of FIFA.

Eligible players tend to surface pretty randomly and there aren’t any notable new ones that I know of. Personally, I check Transfermarkt and Instagram, and run advanced Google searches in different languages to pick up any mentions of Australian heritage in interviews. Player highlights on YouTube can also be useful, as they often mention nationality.
welcome to the forum!

With Ante Šuto having come out of nowhere for Aussie fans and being eligible for us through his passport and Melburnian dad, I do wonder if there’s any other part-Aussies playing around the world who could be worth a look.

Does anyone know of any? Or perhaps is there a tool in which you can see the ancestries of players?
I swear maybe a week or so ago someone posted on the A League subreddit that a young Hoffenheim striker had an Australian parent or grandparent, but the post seems to be deleted. Maybe it was a troll post. I think it was about Max Moerstedt.

This might be a good question for @DDAVIES, @AUFC_Fan, @Bruce Ramsay. I may have forgotten someone(s).

I've heard people who use foitball manager, transfermrket, fotmob, sofascore and do research.
Good question. I have 30-40 players I track because I believe they are eligible for the Australian set-up, many of which are under the age of 20. Coincidentally I am cross-checking that list with Football Australia for accuracy. Some of the names that are playing at a reasonable senior level that may or may not be known to those on this forum:

Melos Bajrami (24, defender, currently in Albania top tier)
Tomislav Glavan (21, forward, currently in Austrian second tier)
Charlie Cummins (20, midfielder, currently at Exeter City)
Ayom Majok (22, forward, currently in Malta top tier)

Obviously guys like Ayman Gulasi, Markus Walker and Cillian Tollett are frequently mentioned here.

Welcome to the forum! I’ll have to try this. Thanks!

Thanks! I knew of Ayom Majok but I hadn’t heard of the others. Seems like none of those would be in the Socceroos picture though unfortunately and I think Ayom Majok was called up for South Sudan if I recall correctly. Still cool to keep an eye on them though!

The Maltese Premier League (MPL) is an interesting one. Yes it’s a crap league but Australia has the largest Maltese diaspora in the world so surely some with Maltese heritage are playing over there. Similarly the Malta Football Association (MFA) would surely be watching the A-League and NPL for players with Maltese heritage given they’d be eligible for the Malta national team.

Agree, perhaps never Socceroo's but who knows. Suto didn't think he was either this time last year. Don't think Majok has played for South Sudan, a training camp call up. Glavan is a big boy (198cm) so brings a physical attribute up forward that we have often looked for.

A few Australia-Malta nationals playing in the Maltese second tier. Also not forgetting the Scicluna brothers who played for the Wolves academy in the UK before returning to Australia. Dylan played youth football for Malta, Australia and then Malata again before switching federations to Australia. Lucas was played youth football only for Malta so I assume he is provisional tied to them. Oh how the rules keep changing!!

Oh I was more basing it off the leagues you mentioned. They aren’t quite strong. Ante Šuto was playing in the HNL then moved to the Premiership. Those are both quite strong leagues.

Dylan Scicluna actually played for the Young Socceroos first. He then played for Malta at an under-19 and under-21 level AFTER, since Malta doesn’t have an under-20 team. He then switched to Australia. Before becoming a Socceroo though he needs to move away from Wanderers, preferably overseas.
