Boro are going to have to be really on the ball the next few weeks and hope results also fall their way. If they don't finish second they're going to have a hard time in the playoffs as Southampton are virtually unbeatable at the moment.

He’s eligible through his mum who is Thai. He has a Thai passport as the photo shows and is halfway through the naturalisation process. He has two competitive caps (both from 2021 in World Cup qualifiers) so he’s almost ineligible on that front.

Players who have made fewer than 3 appearances for the first team.

This includes playing friendly matches for a country before the age of 21. These friendly matches can be changed if the player gains citizenship of the new country at the time of their first match.

He has never played for his home country in a major competition, and hasn't played for his home country in three years since his last match.

*** he is eligible to play for Thailand right now (if they need)

According to Transfermarkt he has made 4 full appearances in official competition (in 2021 for WC2022 qualifiers) and 1 friendly appearance (Jordan 2022). He was born in 1993 so was over 21 at the time of his last official appearance. If this info is correct, he is not eligible to change association. To change association he must meet the following criteria -

c) the player:
i) was fielded in a match in an official competition at “A” international level in any kind of football for his current association;\
ii) at the time of being fielded for his first match in an official competition (at any level) in any kind of football for his current association, he held the nationality of the association which he wishes to represent;
iii) at the time of being fielded for his last match in an official competition in any kind of football for his current association, he had not turned 21 years old;
iv) was fielded in no more than three matches at “A” international level in any kind of football for his current association, whether in an official competition or non-official competition:
v) at least three years have passed since being fielded for his last match at “A” international level in any kind of football for his current association, whether in an official competition or nonofficial competition; and
vi) has never participated in any kind of football at “A” international level in the final tournament of the FIFA World Cup or a final tournament of a confederation competition.

Thailand said they interviewed him and he played 3 world cup qualified games for OZ (the rest were friendly games)

What else is the problem?

At least one problem is that he was older than 20 when he played his last official game for Australia. Refer to clause (iii) in the FIFA document I posted.
