Look, our style of play is boring, but beating Cameroon is a good result nonetheless, even if they were without Bryan Mbeumo.
This is like the 2014 South Africa game. A young opponent without a tournament. Curaçao lost to China so main thing is to have a controlled with with a bit of flair.

With Segecic and Volpato no longer options on the right our depth looks shakier there. I wanted to see Suto but surely we will v Curacao.

Everyone has whacked the Velupillay selection but he has National Team form and I reckon his pace could be a weapon against tiring defences. Although we should pick Bennie ahead of him for the same reason + versatility.
I guess we hope kuol starts hitting his potential

liam chipperfield could be a good option too

Are Curaçao going to be that interesting after losing to China? A chance for us to consolidate tactics but I'd like some rotation.
Just got home from the matches. Curacao were very disappointing for a world cup bound team. It rained at the start and was very cold during this match so maybe the conditions affected them. If thats the best they can do then a really good team will be capable of putting 6 or more past them at the World Cup.

Ok with our performance. We started ok but then they had a bit more ball and I thought controlled the second part of the first half without really threatening. We did much better in the second half. Of the two debutants the young defender went the better. Thought he played pretty well, made a couple of errors that didn't cost us anything and looked OK with the ball for the most part. He should be happy with that effort. Juric didn't really get many opportunities and we looked better after the half time replacements. Happy with Irankunda. If he stays injury free he could be a really good asset for us when he gets a bit more experience at the top level. Good to see our wing backs actually play ahead of the back 3 for most of the game rather than stick to Popovic's back 5 for the majority.

The weather has been horrendous in Sydney the last few days from what I've heard from my parents and brother.
Stinking hot a couple of days ago and bloody cold tonight. At least it warmed up slightly by the Socceroos match but it was bloody cold watching the first game.

I disagree. Segecic should have been on the plane to the World Cup and our first impact sub. They're all big losses.
at this stage of his career sega's technical qualities aren't good enough to make up for his physical limitations, so if you can put pressure on his shots from distance he doesn't offer much else. It's hard to predict where he will be in the next 10 years compared to similar quality 10s/wingers/inside forwards

at the moment he would struggle to make my world cup squad. Mcgree, Metcalf, irankunda are locks for at most 5 inside forward positions. Mabil has been in a promotion chasing la liga 2 side, which leaves one more player, I'd probably have chosen him or kuol for experience

the next world cup, he is mostly competing with those born 2000-2006 which includes di pizio, irankunda, chipperfield, kuol, bennie, Musa Toure (who plays 10), badolato and younis as well as some new wonderkud not on our radar

he probably is in our top 5 from that lot, but not gauranteed. A loss but not gauranteed to be a big one

I see it this way. You have starters. You have subs. You need subs for different game scenarios. Segecic is made for when the oppositions defensive legs are lagging and your team needs a goal. When the pressing eases you get space. Then you need someone who is efficient and clinical. That's Segecic.

True, he does provide something different

shame badalato is injured who can provide something similar

Great debut. Thwaite, O'Neill, Dellbridge and De Vere had solid debuts too but this kid is going places.
I said it earlier during the game but our starting back 3 at the World Cup should be Herrington - Burgess - Circati. Herrington is that good. Ball at feet he was the safest in the XI. Defensively safe. Athletically gifted. He's a talent.

agree but I'd swap burgess with souttar under the assumption he gets back to his best like he did last time

Look great debut no doubt about that but I sure can’t count the chickens till they’ve hatched.
Young lots to learn and they sure weren’t something that other teams could open us up like a canyon.
Hardly got behind us but for cross’s or long balls.
That type of play falls into Poppas game plan staying deep and not venturing high up the pitch.
He had a lot of time on the ball more than not.
Let’s see against a more mobile better NT that means business a few times he faces.
I hope he kicks on - I like his build and height and looking to give the ball well.

He makes more sense than Nishan. Nishan won't start at a World Cup, either will Kuol at this stage. But with 15 minutes to go down 1-0 or still 0-0 and needing a goal to progress. Who adds more value - who adds the chaos factor. Place him as SS and free to do whatever and Kuol is more likely to unlock a tiring defence.

Yeah true. I understand the caution and its justified. But I think he has playing qualities that put him above other options for us. He may get exposed against better teams, many of our defenders might, but I reckon he's got a better chance not to. Experience is the big thing he lacks but I'd back him in.

So would I - but Geria drops out of the squad for Rowles (who came in after an injury). But top 4 CBs barring injury is Circati, Souttar, Burgess and Herrington. I would pick those four plus Rowles (to cover if Souttar doesn't come back properly).

I guess rowles and geria have the fact they cover wing back working in their favour to be number 5 and 6 in the cb rankings

Not sure why that counts in rowles favour rather than elders....
