Absolutely not. Patriotism is about love and connection to your country, period. Different people have different views about what that love implies. You can just as easily be pro a given war out of patriotism or against a war

The right has made the argument that patriotism implies you should be right wing and its a massive and bizarre own goal for the left to be suspicious of it

The songs i mentioned bar 2 (where i gave the caveat) really are patriotic and really do have a connection to the left

Im not suspicious of patriotism, or denounce your right to feel love for your country, shit I share it to a degree although not as vehemently and obviously in my case it extends to both of my πατριδες (patrida =nation ergo patriotism = nationalism .. sorry had to throw in an impromptu Greek lesson :)). I think we just have differing opinions on definitions of some rather lofty concepts.

I was just questioning the leftest ideology of fairness and equality for ALL being diametrically opposed to the selfish singularity of putting ones own nation above others... I still dispute your examples of nationalistic songs as being overtly patriotic or even socialist, but I guess thats probably because the socialist songs I grew up hearing were all partizan songs about the brotherhood of man and the workers of the world rising to destroy the chains of bourgeoisie capital :)

Only time Nationalism and Socialism came together in the 1920s, an unholy alliance occurred which is best left forgotten and does NOT reflect who you come across in any way shape or form...

Anyway this whole conversation came about because of dual nationalism which both serves to dilute AND at the same time strengthen nationalist sentiment.. Its NOT an easy choice to define as it lives, like many lofty sentiments, in the heart of men (and women) and is as individualistic as it is shared and lived... I enjoy the conversation but am saddened at how many people have chosen to "attack" the decisions of these young men.. n

Hitler definitely called himself a national socialist as part of his propaganda. He let a marxist campaign for him in northern germany before killing him in the night of long knives

i have to admit i have no idea how he pulled off such a bald faced lies. He was always forthright in his hatred of communists and communism and harsh views on the poor but still managed to win over some marxists

Had a similar (but longer, more complicated) arc with christians

Patriotism is fine. Nationalism is for the feeble minded.

I know plenty of people from latin countries who are patriotic but it's pride and happiness in cultrure.

The only nationalist types I know generally are not very bright and ironically don't even know much about history. They use it for hating on others, not so much their pride.

Another point on the dual nationals. Popovic is not a big name for overseas players would be attracted to. He doesn't help them polish their game. Okon and Foxe and Mile don't offer that either. Arnold as well would not be a great attraction at least before his run in 2022. But knowing that René Meulensteen (as we had under Arnold) would be polishing your talents and making you a better player must be more attractive than the current set up.

Reassuring words by Robertson but why the games and gaps? I know he was injured for a time but then the stupid documentation saga happened and radio silence.

It's easy to say it was Australia all along but he made his debut just after the world cup and has been mostly absent ever since. It's not good enough given how skilled he is. Too many caps wasted on others.
