With the Asian Cup squad out I think that over the course of the next year, including this tournament, we should look at the World Cup, then the Olympics.

This should be the last tournament for Michelle Heyman and Emily van Egmond (the latter is four caps off breaking the record). Tameka Yallop isn’t in the squad but it should probably also be her last too. Curious to know how long Katrina Gorry lasts.

Emily van Egmond is four caps away from equalling Clare Polkinghorne's record and five away from breaking it altogether but she should not be in the Matildas playing list altogether going forwards, and Michelle Heyman will eventually and inevitably retire either at the conclusion of the current major tournament cycle or when the 2027 Women's World Cup rolls around. I think Tameka Yallop will consider retirement given her recent injury struggles, and maybe Katrina Gorry may call time on her international career at some point between now and June next year.

Yeah I think this is a good point. Let’s say we do win the Asian Cup, what else do they (EvE, Michelle and Mini) need to prove? EvE will have broken the cap record and all three will have won the Asian Cup. Meeks has already won an Asian Cup (albeit with a much weaker squad in an earlier era, early in development and well before big money and support came in) so if she played in this she’d have two and possibly be the most internationally decorated Matilda ever.

This is the World Cup squad thread. Ignore the other one, I forgot I made this.

Welcome to the forum! Agree with most of the selections but not sure if Kayla Morrison will be eligible for the Matildas in time for the 2027 Women's World Cup, and Michelle Heyman may well retire between now and next June. Personally I'd go for Holly McNamara as a second striker along with Sam Kerr also, and have Shelby McMahon as an option on the wing as opposed to Melina Ayres who's only been capped at Young Matildas level and hasn't been part of the national team setup for the past ten years.

Welcome to the forum!!!

It’s 26 I’m pretty sure, so we can have more than that. Personally though I don’t think Katrina Gorry will make it and I’m confident Michelle Heyman will be retired too. Mini is 33 with a wife and two kids while Michelle is 37, doesn’t really score much anymore and only came back out of retirement because of Sam Kerr’s ACL injury.

I think the Kayla Morrison idea is dead by now. She has Australian citizenship now but FIFA won’t let her switch, even though they happily let us lose players to European countries even if those losses hurt us. Kayla’s 29 and we have a lot of defensive depth. I just can’t see her making it. Debuting at nearly 30 is quite rare.

I’m confident Michelle Heyman will be retired too.
Michelle Heyman will most likely have retired either midway through the current major tournament cycle or before it culminates with the 2027 Women's World Cup as she'll be 38 in early July and she'll still be playing at 39 years of age if she were to make the playing list.

If I were to pick the squad as of now, with their ages as of 24 June 2027 (when the World Cup kicks off) in brackets:

Goalkeepers
  • Mackenzie Arnold (33)
  • Teagan Micah (29)
  • Jada Whyman (27)
Defenders
  • Ellie Carpenter (26)
  • Steph Catley (33)
  • Charli Grant (25)
  • Wini Heatley (25)
  • Clare Hunt (28)
  • Courtney Nevin (25)
  • Jamilla Rankin (23)
  • Charlize Rule (24)
  • Kaitlyn Torpey (27)
Midfielders
  • Alex Chidiac (28)
  • Kyra Cooney-Cross (25)
  • Daniela Galić (20)
  • Alanna Kennedy (32)
  • Amy Sayer (25)
  • Clare Wheeler (29)
Forwards
  • Caitlin Foord (32)
  • Mary Fowler (24)
  • Kahli Johnson (23)
  • Sam Kerr (33)
  • Holly McNamara (24)
  • Annalise Rasmussen (22)
  • Hayley Raso (32)
  • Remy Siemsen (27)
Reserves
  • Indi dos Santos (19)
  • Sharn Freier (25)
  • Jacynta Gala (26)
  • Izzy Gomez (24)
  • Grace Kuilamu (20)
  • Teresa Morrissey (27)
  • Alana Murphy (21)
  • Jess Nash (22)
  • Leia Varley (25)
  • Cortnee Vine (29)
Of course club and friendly form is key. I’m not convinced all of the older players will make it. Plus knowing our luck someone may unfortunately get injured and miss the World Cup altogether.

I'd say Chloe Lincoln comes in as a replacement for Jada Whyman who's had long-standing knee issues and is likely injury prone, and possibly Alanna Kennedy might not make it to the culmination of the current major tournament cycle but other than that the squad seems fairly solid.

Yeah I was tossing up on Alanna Kennedy. She had a really good tournament this time but is usually average now that she’s aged so much.

Chloe Lincoln should not be our go-to. Her form at Brisbane Roar is concerning.

Chloe Lincoln still has big game and major tournament experience from the ASEAN Women's Championship and those two group stage matches where she was between the sticks for the Matildas during the Women's Asian Cup though, but likely she'll still be a differential option behind Mackenzie Arnold and Teagan Micah.

My likely 26-player Matildas squad for the 2027 Women's World Cup would be as follows:
  • Goalkeepers: Mackenzie Arnold, Teagan Micah, Chloe Lincoln, Teresa Morrissey
  • Defenders: Steph Catley, Ellie Carpenter, Jessika Nash, Winonah Heatley, Clare Hunt, Kaitlyn Torpey, Charlize Rule
  • Midfielders: Kyra Cooney-Cross, Katrina Gorry, Clare Wheeler, Leticia McKenna, Aideen Keane, Amy Sayer, Alex Chidiac
  • Forwards: Sam Kerr, Holly McNamara, Hayley Raso, Shelby McMahon, Annalise Rasmussen, Alana Jancevski, Caitlin Foord, Mary Fowler
Additional players as part of a 55-player preliminary list
  • Goalkeepers: Courtney Newbon, Sally James
  • Defenders: Alexia Apostolakis, Bryleeh Henry, Karly Roestbakken, Tegan Bertolissio, Sasha Grove, Courtney Nevin, Charli Grant, Chelsea Blissett, Tash Prior, Jamilla Rankin, Leia Varley
  • Midfielders: Talia Younis, Alana Murphy, Sophie Hoban, Izzy Gomez, Indiana Dos Santos, Mackenzie Hawkesby
  • Forwards: Daisy Brown, Peta Trimis, Skye Halmarick, Caley Tallon-Henniker, Sharn Freier, Grace Kuilamu, Remy Siemsen, Cortnee Vine, Kahli Johnson, Jacynta Galabadaarachchi
Players with names in italics might not make the culmination of the current major tournament cycle, and those with names in bold were part of the Women's Asian Cup playing list.

No Dani Galić?

I’d put Courtney Nevin in the first list too. Probably also Charli Grant depending on her next move. She starts all the time for Malmö who could win the Damallsvenskan this season. Shelby McMahon is a good one but she’ll be only 18. Willa Pearson is probably closer to the Matildas than Mackenzie Hawkesby too. I like Macca but she’s just not international level.

Charli Grant has had injury problems before and I'm not sure whether she'll be right for the World Cup though, and Courtney Nevin's form wasn't that good at the Women's Asian Cup. Shelby McMahon will be 19 years of age by opening day of the 2027 Women's World Cup, and Mackenzie Hawkesby has had experience in Matildas camp before whereas Willa Pearson still needs to develop in the farm system before being promoted to the senior Tillies setup. I've also omitted Daniela Galic because we haven't seen her play under Montemurro yet and we don't know how she'll fit into the tactical system.

I think you are jumping the gun somewhat, there are many players that we have not seen playing under Montemurro and until we see what strategy he will use it’s pointless nominating players who may or may not fit in to his system.

We haven’t seen a lot of those players under him though. Hopefully that changes with the FIFA Series games.
