Australian news and politics.

Right wingers don't know whether to support the Muslims heckling a Labor PM or support the white PM being heckled by Muslims. :ROFLMAO:
Also, ideologically they're closer to if not the same as the hardliners in the mosque than your average aussie.

It's different culture of living. While Strata and leasehold in the UK gets a lot of air time, criticism as a deterrent to buying a flat which appears justified, Germany has its own similar systems and costs but they just don't get the same air time.

I think the main reason is German people still rent and will probably purchase a house before an apartment.

If you mention apartment purchases to any Australian the Strata aspect gets brought up right away.

I get that people want to have very minimal cost after purchase and Strata stories show it's a rip off and I need of big reform but owners surely need to faace facts that operating and maintaining key parts of a building cost money.

The major complaints are that maintenance is not done timely, preventative maintenance is basically non-existent, and the operating costs are not seen by the people who live there.

That's perfectly fair. I wonder if people can be satisfied with their Strata given the money they pay. People are try to live off the grid as best they can. There are too many levies around across Strata, council and other associations that get the money and aren't held accountable for waste or inaction.

Looks like One Nation are doing well in SA. Polling showed that heaps of people would be willing to vote for them federally though only a subset would actually vote for them.

What a crazy country we live in. People so proud of our country and backing the Matildas, not caring at all about the fact that many are in married lesbian relationships, yet at the same time people voted for Cory Bernardi who compared gay marriage to bestiality all those years ago and refused to back down.

I think it just shows that the major parties lost people unfortunately. Being too extreme and too unpopular has never led well. How did Trump get in? How did Hitler get in? Of course, Pauline Hanson doesn’t compare to either despite similarities with Trump, but the principle remains. We need centrist major parties who serve the Australian people.

For the record, I have nothing against Peter Malinauskas himself. I would have voted Liberal, but I think Labor have done a decent job in SA, and NSW to be fair.

The electoral battleground lies at the political centre, but the lifeblood of politics flows from its wings. It is on the ideological fringes that politicians are first forged, and where activism is shaped, sharpened, and given purpose.

I think any serious student of politics recognises a familiar trajectory - once established within the structures of party power, most politicians gravitate toward the centre, where compromise is rewarded and elections are ultimately decided.

One nation doing well is a gift for labor.

SA Election won in landslide because the right is fractured. Liberals are ones losing the majority of votes. Labor losing some but not enough.

One nation will never get enough votes to win. Ffs they can’t even get candidates without resorting to sex offenders

Which is why Redditors are saying they want One Nation to do well. They wanna eliminate any reasonable competition so their magical Labor/Greens alliance is in government “forever” since One Nation are too conservative. But those who know history know that wouldn’t fair well.

I wouldn’t blame the centre lefts. I’d blame the liberals. They pander to sky news bullshit and make themselves unelectable.

You ca be a greedy money focused twat but also show compassion for social issues. All their politicians are duds or have some weird axe to grind.

If labor win the Victorian election it will actually be almost funny. How bad would the liberals have to be not not turn this one around and win for once.

Yep. The argument has merit. The electoral strength of a major party is often less a reflection of its own dominance than of the fragmentation of its opposition.

A comparable dynamic was evident in the 2024 United Kingdom general election. There, Reform UK effectively carved out a significant portion of the Conservative Party vote, contributing materially to Labour Party’s decisive victory. Crucially, this was not because Reform UK was in a position to win power, but because its presence fractured the electoral coalition that had previously sustained Conservative governance.

What is particularly interesting, however, is the potential for this pattern to operate in reverse. Just as the right can be destabilised by insurgent parties, so too can the left. Again in the British context, the growing appeal of the Green Party of England and Wales among Labour’s more ideologically committed voters suggests the early contours of a similar fragmentation. While unlikely to supplant Labour as a governing force, such movements can erode its electoral base at the margins, precisely where elections are often decided.

In short, minor parties rarely need to win power to exert influence, their real significance lies in their capacity to redistribute votes in ways that reshape the balance between the major parties.

I dunno something about running out of petrol it's all very vague
We have more petrol and diesel now than before the start of the current crisis. At the moment in the cities and suburbs there is price gouging because of an increased demand as people panic buy (an understand response by people worried about what is happening).

The regions are different. A lot of the retailers in the regions are run by people that rely on spot price contracts. They have the two fold problem. The wholesalers look after their own first. Secondly their business model is based on the spot price which is very high and they don't have the capital to fill their tanks at the higher spot prices.

That is not to say there won't be problems going forward. Just that we are not there yet and the reporting saying we we will run out of petrol at the end of April presupposes we receive no supplies from today until the end of April while we are receiving around 6 ships per day just as we were before the crisis.

Labor should run ads for One Nation at the next Victorian election

There's a few in here who want that as well.
