Australian Dual Nationals 🇦🇺🏳️

I think the worst story I heard was from SMPete. It was so disappointing to hear of his treatment it what should have been a unifying moment. I never made it to Germany - my highlight came in the Uruguay game. Everyone was hugging everyone. even after the game the number of Uruguyan that wanted to come and celebrate with us was amazing. The difference in experience is stark.

Its sadly NOT a unique story, for example after THAT Iran match I was told, "why do you care anyway your REAL country didnt qualify either" whilst wearing a Socceroos scarf.... go figure.

I think there are generational differences at play here as well. Hard for me to speak on the migrant experience, but it seems third generation feel less tied to Aus than Popa's second generation? This would follow a bit of a cultural trend amongst gen z where there doesn't seem to be the attachment and appreciation for Aus? National pride seems to be associated with the right, despite how lucky we all are to live here.

Hmmm, the statement "It's probably better for Adrian now that he's gone because I won't hold him back from where he really wants to be" sound a touch bitchy to me. Sound like there might have been a bit of tension between Popovic and Segacic.

I'm not a fan of the new rules. I think players should be allowed to switch during their youth team years. The world is becoming more multicultural.

I really enjoyed the pod, especially Alex and Pete. As a son of immigrants, I can relate. My own experience in Australia is that I always felt I had to pick between being Australian or Portuguese. As I've gotten older, I don't feel like I need to pigeonhole myself as one or the other. I am both.

As a kid, I would have selected to play for Australia. However, as I have gotten older and seen first hand how poorly Australian football has been run at times, I'd select to play for Portugal. It doesn't make me any less Australian. Maybe if I had grown up in Portugal and seen how football is run there, I might want to play for Australia.

As I said before, if we have a good environment, Australian footballers will want to play for Australia instead of the country of their parents/grandparents.
I can understand playing for another nation’s youth national team if it’s more practical to do so (as with Ale Circati and Cristian Volpato playing for Italy’s youth teams since they played for Italian clubs) but when it comes to senior football I think it should be the country you were born, raised and developed in. If the Socceroos were crap then good players not playing would make us even worse. You can’t improve a team without good players.

If you can’t make the national team of that country then you can switch to still play internationals. Take the Dutch for example. Dutch players who are good enough will play for the Netherlands but if they’re not then it’s great that they’re gonna go and improve the quality of teams like Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao, Indonesia and Suriname (all former Dutch colonies; I’m pretty sure Curaçao’s whole team is Dutch and most of Indonesia’s starting 11 is Dutch, plus Suriname is converting a lot of Dutch players for their World Cup playoff).

I broadly agree with Popa.

However, as other have pointed out we could have been smarter about this. Not subbing on Triantis for a cap in the qualifier was a mistake as he had just turned 22 and that would have secured him. I don't think there was a similar opportunity with Sega, as he would have needed 3 caps due to his age at the time. Would getting on the pitch in a friendly have changed his mind? Seems unlikely but who knows

I think it’s just different per person. Josip Šimunić was a crazy nationalist who appears to have felt little connection to Australia and he was from an older generation. Joey Didulica and Anthony Šerić also played for Croatia and are from an older generation.

The woke “I hate Australia, Australia is racist” narrative ironically is mostly pushed by Anglos.

I only realised after she switched that she was a girl lol. Probably shoulda put it in the women’s version of this thread.
She does have a brother that also signed to Sydney FC academy at the same time she did.

Yoogali junior too btw. Nowhere for players like them to play without uprooting to Sydney now that Canberra is out of the picture.

The disingenuous bit was him comparing his own experience. No one was looking at Popovic when he was first picked - Harry and Dukes yes but Popovic no-one would look sideways at him from a country that never qualifies.

Good point about those three.
Interesting quote from Didulica in the Guardian article about Segacic.

I think it is a pretty common occurrence where second and third gen migrants don't feel and are often told you aren't Aussie, then at the same time when they return 'home' they are told and don't feel like they are from there either.

When I was chatting to one of my football mates, who is third gen Italian, he just can't believe these guys. To the point where he actually gets upset haha. I suspect they may end up regretting the decision later in life. Triantis maybe less so as he will probably have an international career, but Segacic and Volpato if they don't make it internationally will probably wonder what the point was.

Ive heard Popa's view on the Segecic story, yes it does come out as trying to defend themselves which you can understand and point the blame on the player here however when Popa says im coming from a different generation and expect mostly gen z players to understand he's point of view? Not sure I agree with this sentiment.

Let's hope the lessons are learned from this so we dont experience this again, my fear is we going to again but I hope im wrong.

If this is a time the FA need a TD/DOF etc then its now so the next young talent doesn't slip over the cracks.

We have the chance to go a long way in the World Cup. This is an uninspiring squad. If he does this in May even with Souttar and Irvine in then we are headed for a group exit when we potentially with the right selections and tactics could top the group. If that happens Popovic loses his job.

He is the same cohort as Simunic, Didulica and Seric. Simunic was probably better, but he was at least as good as the other two. They absolutely would have looked at him.

I dont want to sound rude but even with the likes of Irvine who is technically limited and a player in Harry Souttar who hasn't played much football in 2 years I don't think squad can go far, maybe a round of 16 match at best but that's it from what I can see.

Simunic debuted for Croatia in 2001 6 years after Popovic debuted for Australia in 1995. Australia was on the world stage by then after their run at the Confederation Cup where Popovic played, Seric 1998 and Didulica later than Simunic

You are behind the times Popovic. It makes me so angry how out of touch he is and what it will cost us.

I got to the end of Aussie Scouts bit. Will listen to SMPete tonight. Has been good so far. It hasn't really addressed the strategic and structural failings contributing to these defections though. The FA has a bit to answer for.

At that point a single youth team cap was enough to lock you down which was 1988 for Popa at under 17s, 3 years before Croatian independence haha. So you are correct.
