AFL thread

When you used to watching countries vs countries a state vs state seems rather remedial
It’s the only legitimate representative play in that code, so the AFL has a responsibility to re-embrace it. I’m just not convinced that they intend to; certainly not to the extent even I’d like to see.

I think it would be in the best interests for the AFL to re-embrace State of Origin given how enthralling this year's contest was and the potential for them to be bringing in sold out crowds for these fixtures, but likely the higher-ups will be more preoccupied with global expansion and rule changes instead.

It's interesting how they sell it to the fans and the fans accept it but then you have football and other sports where you play for your country in international sports and nobody cares

Since less than 24hrs ago? Bc the vast majority of ‘em have vocally been all “State of Origin died w/Ted Whitten” “I don’t want my club’s best players getting injured while playing in this sh1t” etcetera, over the past 25+ years💡

In fairness its no different to the NFL in the US, GAA in Ireland, kabbadi in India, ice hockey in Canada, sumo in Japan, I'm not one to defend the AFL but countries are allowed to be devoted to their indigenous game, not everyone has to follow what the rest of the world does.

They can indeed I'm just saying it's why I've lost interest

Not too different to the USA getting flag football included. So you're telling me our excellent Oz Tag teams will be permitted to play forward passes?

It's a different sport but seeing how poorly NFL players try a rugby play in desperate times is laughable when it's just a simple back line move.

They make Danny Townsend look competent. This, AFLX, trying to invade New Zealand, China, USA, UK, and other failures... they have more money than sense, more failures than soccer, but endless cash and government support.

To be fair the NRL are also pushing for league to be included in the Brisbane 2032 Olympics, but ultimately whether getting AFL included will be a success or not will depend on how much viewership it gets, having not been on the Olympic stage since it was a demonstration sport in 1956.

Rugby league 10's was always fun when I was at school. 7's is too explosive. I like 10 aside to cover plenty of the pitch.

I guess given how successful they are with suits this silly, it makes me wonder if we overemphasize the suits

We might be but I think the overemphasis of the suits comes from the fact that they effectively hold all the power and influence in addition to determining the direction in which their respective codes go, and our desire to at least hold power to account.
