General A Leagues thread (Men and Women) 2025/26 season

And the fact they were the dominant team of that era.

Same reason people of my vintage are Man United fans (I became a Leeds fan in the mid 90's).
Presumably you picked Leeds for Harry Kewell and Mark Viduka plus they were a good team back then?

Man U also had Aussie links back then with Mark Bosnić playing for them.

Brother I dont know what to tell you. If you think Rivellino's little flick trick from the 1970s is NEW coaching methodology..
Flicks and tricks don't win you football games. And also the Joga Bonito street football mythology bullshits discount the ruthless military style Brazilian football system. I appreciate the beautiful game, I've dedicated my life to it, however a bunch of gifted musicians need a conductor.

Yer I agree
When this guy did all these flicks really pissed me off bloody Brazilian thinking he’s a conductor like wtf 😁

I was respnding to the one who was "mansplaining" the flip flop and the rabona as if they were something invented yesterday by the FFA... :)

If a player learns a dribbling technique, they have unique names to differentiate themselves. Matthews Cut, body swerve, La Croqueta, Elastic, The Cut, Cruyff Turn, etc.

The Elastic is called Elastico in futsal and Brazil.

Haven't seen a South M player apply the Elastic successfully in a game - yet. I live in hope.
@Decentric If you want to see a REAL Elastico, 1 hour 7 min :57 mark Max Mikkola... HELLAS NEVER fails me.

Saw Dylan Sicluna execute a lovely Zidane 360 degree turn, beating 2 players successively, which led to a WSW goal attempt, or goal.

Just can't keep up with the current AL round, so have to post here!

A lot of the younger gen have so many more dribbling techniques they can use effectively in match conditions.

Lopane for City, plus his teammate, Younis, Vic's Jelacic, WSW's Hammond, Mac's Vickery, Jets' Eli Adams, are also using some slick dribbling techniques. It didn't happen in the past. One might see the Standard Cut, the body swerve and the odd Brazilian Inside Stepover.

Now we have Elastics, La Croquetas, Zidane 360s, Cruyff Turns, the Brazilian Roll and Outside Stepover, and variations of the Brazilian Inside Stepover - to augment them. All in the AL!

By the way don't consider a Rabona as a genuine useful technique! More like a circus trick!

Happy days!

They can cause teams to create overloads in attacking scenarios though.

Moreover, players capable of beating opponents with clever dribbling tricks, in 1v1 actions, draw extra defenders, creating other attacking teammates who are unmarked.

Sicluna beat 2 for WSW with a Zidane 360, which created a goal chance, or goal, after 2 more passes.

Arzani beat 2 Buri players with a La Croqueta, but his second touch put the ball a bit too far in front in the pen box having beaten both Buri defenders neck and crop, and, a 3rd Buri defender pounced in the nick of time before Arzani shot close to the Buri goal ( which given his current shooting form would probably have missed).

I've been in the system.

Many coaches thought it was the job of coaches coaching older, or younger players than their age group/team, to impart a range of techniques. Nobody was doing it.

State underage coaches have told me this in the past.

If they were doing them, why were so few Aussies at senior level never performing them under match conditions?

In the SAP/NTC system and its successor, younger players have acquired a range of techniques. Some players like some techniques more than others. Some can do some techniques better than other techniques too.

He has blown me out!
sometimes when a player is neat on the ball but amazing off the ball they just explode like scicluna (in terms of improving really suddenly and catching people by surprise)

I remember Mooy at the wsw. His data in creating turnovers were decent, particularly when he was physically not particularly amazing, and he also had a nice first touch and was technically neat without catching the eye

all of a sudden he exploded, and it feels like scicluna has been the same lately

probably the most impressive data I can remember off the ball (creating turnovers and touches indicating he is opening passing lanes) but suddenly mind blowing on the ball too
