If Toure is out then we need to try Sapsford and others as we know everything Duke can do. Hope it eat my words but if Duke and Boyle play it'll be a very lame approach.
Toures injury is shit, but it means we can look at the depth options. I worry Sapsford is outta position as a sole 9 but we can find out if he can do the job. Theres benefit in that.

We know what Duke does. I want to see the other options.

When do squads generally get released? There's plenty of little sub-plots here and eager to see who makes it!

To be quite honest there are probably quite a few people that are locks for the World Cup. I would have liked this window to be the almost locked in squad. But sadly with injuries that is not to be. And like Daniel Garb I would bring in both Volpata and Arena into camp to get the feel of the lay of the land - with no expectation that they commit. Even playing in both games would not lock them in so there should be no pressure and also no expectation that they will go to the World cup. I wouldn't even necessarily give them game time. If anything I see them more as an Asian cup and beyond if they commit.

That said while keeping a few locks for stability I've now gone the other way and gone experimental. I want to see what out young CBs can do. We need to test out Italiano at RWB (with cover for Nisbet and Metcalfe). We need to see Farrell vs Behich, We need to see Sapsford and Segecic. With Toure out we need to see the speedsters being fed vertically by Balard. This squad probably only has about 10 locks in it - but we have to know what others can do. We been rocked by injury, Toure, Miller, Silvera, Harry still out. I'm afraid that my original thought of having this window as close to the June squad now seems to be who to replace those we have lost or we don't know will come back and experiment to cover any other injuries that come our way.

I may be wrong, but wouldnt Volpato and Arena both have the lodge change of allegiance documents with FIFA just to feature at all since both play official underage matches for Italy?

That's correct. Both are tied to Italy until, or if, they successfully change sporting nationality with FIFA.

It's a one-time switch, so perhaps now that's possibly not so important for Volpato. But if Arena harbours ambition of representing Italy at Senior level, he is probably unwilling to commit to Australia just yet

My squad. Not entirely sure about injuries.

Ryan, Izzo, Gauci

Italiano, Strain, Geria, Circati, Burgess, Matthews, Elder, Bos

Irvine, O'Neill, Devlin, Balard, Robertson, Metcalfe

McGree, Irankunda, Segecic, Bennie, Velupillay, Kuol, Sapsford, T. Yengi, Iredale

Toure, Goodwin and Miller out have opened some massive opportunities. We know it'll be Duke, Boyle and Borrello.

We really shouldn't be experimenting at this point but these players are sharp and should be able to do something regardless of the Popovic script.

Sapsford strikes me as a kid who's got no fear. Makes him very dangerous. Really hope he gets good minutes.

TBH honest the camp needs to be more than 26. I would absolutely have Farrell in camp. For two reasons. Compare with Elder for that spot. but more importantly to play intersquad games where he frustrates Irankunda. In my mind Irankunda is an immnse risk but high reward at the World Cup.

Let intersquad games happen with Farrell there to piss him off. We all know every team knows he is a hothead and he will be targeted. Let Farrell do it in camp and Popovic get it into his head that if he is getting fouled that is to our advantage. Constant fouls will lead to free kicks and cards for the opponents. That is to our advantage, Irankunda getting sent off is definitely not. Make it clear to Irankunda that reactions in the two games means he doesn't make the World Cup. We need 11 men in every game.
