The SPFL competes with the EPL & the EFL for pounds, as well as both codes of Rugby. All five are on Sky, BT sports and Premier sports.

While I get where you’re coming from (and mostly agree), football competing with football is something a little different than football competing with other sports that are getting more dollars.

Hey Nic, what exactly do you think football is competing with the other sports for apart from government funding? We have a totally seprate fanbase than NRL and AFL surely? I eman maybe some soccer fans watch the two occasionaly but I very much doubt a true AFL or NRL supporter would even know soccer exisited.

SPFL/EPL/EFL are part and parcel of the fabric and mainstayers since year dot, throw in the eggball (union) for it does have its following And they all are on mainstay broadcasters and news news news.
Here we are pegging what - #4/5th code - have a puny 12 Pro franchise model that in the big picture is laughed at or more so neglected by mainstream for its nothing to them and a semi pro league that runs on fumes.
With all the population as mentioned pro struggles to avg 8/10k at the best of times and we keep persisting doing the same thing - you keep posting crowd numbers in glee like look at this but what does it achieve for the whole of the game ? absolutely nothing from my perspective.
I reckon throw out the dummy - cop the APL ogarlords abandonment and yep, full open eco system. NCB sort out the details/caps/visa's etc and lets see what becomes.

Thats what Im saying, apart from a small crossover of fans people are either MORE Soccer or MORE football.. either way there are enough soccer fans in this country ( if you include Aleague, Socceroos, NPL, State leagiue, EPL, Overseas leagues... or anything) to support multiple divisions, we ALREADY HAVE multiple divisons - just the fact that we have more than a thousand clubs proves that.... its joining them that APL doesn't want because they will lose the millions they have already pissed away... How is that OUR problem?

Yeah I agree. In France it's about 10 hours from Dunkirk to Marseille. Though to be fair that's only like Sydney to Brisbane in a car.

English travel distances are less because A. there are so many London teams and teams in places relatively close to London (e.g. few Cornish teams in the EFL; the longest away days are between Cornwall and Tyneside); compare this to France where Paris has only two Ligue 1 teams (Paris FC and PSG) or Germany where Berlin has only one Bundesliga team (Union Berlin), for example, and B. England is a small country and is only part of the UK. Scottish and Northern Irish teams don't play in English competitions (though Berwick Rangers and Tweedmouth Rangers in England plays in Scotland's lower divisions), and only a select few Welsh teams do (some local English teams also play in Wales).

I have heard the idea of a British Premier League floated around though, but I doubt it would work at this time. I've also heard proposals for the Benelux countries to form a Benelux League (Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands). They did this in the women's game once but Belgium ended up pulling out so they went back to having separate leagues. In ice hockey the BeNe League is the highest level of Belgian and Dutch ice hockey.

Corporate dollars I think is a thing as well - eg, broadcast deals. NRL and AFL can filter more money to the clubs to operate than APL/FA ever could. Even without football, lets just say AFL was the ONLY sport in the land, I could foresee their broadcast deal today being double what it is now.

I know that doesn't really relate to the whole Pro/Rel thing - but if financial stability of clubs in this country is supposed to be the blocker to it, then - that will be a big part of it as well.

Good point - are the Eggball codes in the UK paid the same amount as our A-League clubs? (player salaries)

Sure but here is the kicker, I dont believe financial stability of football clubs IS the blocker to pro rel.... Or more specifically the financial stability of football clubs OUTSIDE the APL bubble... The other 99% of clubs are all pretty much currently financial stable enough to compete... sure the element of travel may seem insurmountable but with 12 or so season of the Australia cup and now the Championship, I think this is a hurdle all but the smallest clubs can overcome...

Sure but South Melbourne received AUD 1.5 million to cover costs for the Oceania Pro League from the fed government, and while Im sure the AFL and NRL have received bucketloads more, there is still money to be squeezed out with a professional setup.. Wea re just fearful to try it.. AFL and NRL because they dont need too, and Football because the investors of APL hold everyone else hostage.

I'd say the plan works in theory but I don't agree with them removing the salary cap in the top two divisions because it will inevitably lead to the competition becoming unbalanced and also it means that there's a disconnect between the A-League and Australian Championship when the original plan was to have the Australian Championship be the national second division.

Why does Flopari ALWAYS go back to the divide and conquer model when things are against the precious APL?? Its so predictable...

There are 1001 "models" people speak about for implementing pro/rel in this country, Splitting Aleague into two 9 club pseudo divisions is NOT one of the better ones...

Heres a better one ... starting from end of this season the Australian Championship will be made up of 8 x foundation clubs and 8 x winners of respective state NPLS (this includes the NPL squads of all Australian Aleague franchises) At the end of the Championship the bottom 2 clubs on the table return to their state NPLS and the other 14 x clubs ARE the 1st division in Australia.. Aleague clubs cease to play two squads and ONLY need to join the pyramid at their respective NPL side level... THEN moving forward we have

• Top tier - Australian Championship 2 down
• End of season qualification tournament for Australian Championship - 8 x NPL winners comepting for 2 x promotion spots.
• Second Divison (regional satte based as is) - State NPLs some states may not change per year, other may have 1 new team added or 1 team promoted.
• State based pyramid below them as is.

This can happen tomorrow..... ONLY money needed is for travel for end of season torunament for 8 NPL teams, who, if theya re ready to be prmoted will probably be able tot ake care of thsi anyway.....

How was the Australian Championship EVER meant to be a second division without a mechanism to be promoted into a 1st divison.
