Mandelson, along with Tony Blair were the architects of what became known in British politics as 'New Labour'.

It was the gentrification of what was once the party of the working class.

My old man a lifelong union official despised Mandelson, Blair and the other protagonists of New Labour....Which became the political party of choice for Britain's metropolitan middle and professional classes.

Medicare being top of that list. I think the Australian healthcare system is extroadinarily good.

I also think that Australia's social security system is second to none.

But I also see many things that the right has done well.

Such as the liberalisation of economics and the implementation of free trade agreements etc...

I know people will disagree but Australia’s political system works very well. And that's why it is considered a great destination country for millions of migrants.

A summer camp leader who sexually assaulted children after giving them sweets laced with tranquilliser has admitted drugging his wife to stop her waking up during the abuse.

Jon Ruben, 76, previously admitted sexually assaulting two boys at a Christian camp he ran at Stathern Lodge in Leicestershire, as well as child cruelty towards six other children.

The former veterinary surgeon was arrested after eight children and one adult fell ill at the camp in July.

Ruben cried in the dock at Leicester crown court yesterday as he admitted administering a poison or noxious substance, temazepam, to his wife, Susan, between July 26 and July 29.

After entering his guilty plea, he said tearfully: “I’m so sorry.”

Ruben, who runs the Christian charity Stathern Children’s Holiday Fund with his wife, had been staying at the lodge with dozens of children from Nottingham as well as volunteers helping to run a three-day camp.

The charity organises subsidised holidays at the lodge for children from disadvantaged areas of Nottingham and calls its summer camps “safe havens for fostering friendships, building skills and sparking potential”.

He laced sweets with a tranquillising drug and attacked two children after asking them to play “a sweet game”, during which he would go into the boys’ rooms when they were getting ready for bed and challenge them to eat the sweets as “quickly as they can”.

In November, he pleaded guilty to sexual assault of a child under 13, assault of a child under 13 by penetration, eight counts of child cruelty, three counts of making indecent images of children and four drugs charges.

He had been running the summer camp for at least 27 years and there was a “long history of children feeling sick at the camp”, the court previously heard. Mary Prior KC, prosecuting, told the court that Ruben requested a voluntary police interview when he admitted he drugged his wife.

Ruben’s stepson alerted police on July 26 after searching his belongings and finding items including baby oil, Vaseline and syringes.

Children would often feel unwell after playing the “sweet game”, but Ruben would tell them that they were “overwrought”, the court was told.

Ruben, from Ruddington, Nottinghamshire, is due to be sentenced tomorrow.
