I think almost all of these return to A-league players at this point in time is to try and make the WC squad eg Teague, Arzani, Duke

Maybe Duke but I don't think the other two come back this quickly if there isn't the carrot of a WC at the end of the season.
That's exactly what it is. Popovic will see them more regularly too. At the same time the J League starts again in February I think in a compacted season so the panic around J League based players is unnecessary.

Duke came back for game time and fitness. In Japan he has played the equivalent of 25 games since late 2023. At this stage he is not a 90 minute player for the NT.

Yep, would love to know what the highest Viduka and Kewell transfers would be in today’s market. Those figures are 23-25 years old and still no. 2 & 3.

Also kinda crazy Dukes is in there three times.
football inflation is roughly 9%

So if it was 20 years ago it was 5-6 times bigger if converted to todays money

Naaah. Brennan Johnson just got sold to Crystal Palace for 35m pounds which is about $70m AUD. Dukes scored 20 a season multiple times. No way he’s going for less than $100m.
A factor of 5 works pretty well to be honest comparing top transfers in the world 20 years ago

with this season

Interesting, I’ll check it out.

$100m AUD is about 50m quid, I think both of them would’ve reached that. Like Kalac said, we might never produce players as good as them again.

I think its slightly better than that. 17million pounds for kewell goes to 65 million today if it was 20 years ago

both clearly in the top 20 in the world

I looked it up a number of years ago and when Kewell moved to Liverpool there were legitimate offers from Man U, Barca and one of the Milan’s (can’t remember which), among others.

At the time, they were the reigning champions of the EPL, Spain and Serie A.

Wake me if that ever happens again.

Something Brennan Johnson had though, despite his inconsistency at Spurs, was that he scored the winning goal in the Europa League final.

Good return!

Imagine if fans could invest in players, have a part share in them. Enough fans pool together to bring a gun player to the club, or keep them. Prevent crap managers from dumping club favourites. Take profits (or cut losses) when the player is transferred.

Just a thought 🤔

Hmm sounds like you are describing a members owned football club...

These actually do exist in Europe and South America. Barça kicked out their board back in 2021 and Benfica had the largest football presidential election ever last year. Real Madrid are also fan-owned, as are most German clubs and big South American clubs.
