Straya Day

My point, sort of, is Australians will travel all over the world to see ancient sites and view them with admiration and respect and yet your anti flag burning 'patriots' have nothing but disdain and contempt for ours.

And also other countries are proud of their ancient sites.
I recommend anyone going to the Kimberly Region, oldest geological area on Earth.

"Socialism is a fantastic system - until you run out of other people's money".

I am tired of hearing how it is not fair on young people that they can't afford a house in their first year of leaving school, or how my society leeching superannuation pension is a luxury that I did not actually pay for throughout my entire working life.

Taxing the billionaires and making the rich pay their fair share will not change the immediate gratification generation and it won't make money go where it should.

As you have mentioned previously; having politicians, whose interest is in improving the country and not just lining their pockets and being re-elected, regardless of which major party they ascribe to, is not something we have anymore.

There is enough money in this country to solve our problems as is if it is directed properly. Homelessness, domestic violence, insurance costs, football, ebikes - fixed.

The decisions in Government about expenditure are mind numbingly nonsensical and no doubt well covered in the Australian Politics thread that I refuse to open - with frustration over politics in general giving rise to a personal detestation of the subject and my head in the sand defensive reaction.

Australia is a fantastic country and one I have great pride in being part of.

It is what makes it hurt so much when our actions and image as a country are undermined by idiots, bogans, rednecks, greenies, lefties, righties, self-serving politicians and any other group or individual that brings our country into disrepute.

I have no problem with anyone wearing an Aussie flag out of pride for our nation. I have a problem with anyone wearing or displaying our flag as a weapon against others.

Burning an effigy always made more sense to me than burning a flag. It shows that you recognise there is a huge difference between a country and its people as opposed to the actual people who make decisions you don't agree with.

Exactly!!!
Just show some respect and pride.
Pride in what? Something that you quite clearly state is NOT MY COUNTRY?

Christ, get your thoughts together at least, you're all over the shop.
Oh FFS. No it aint your country if you are Greek or Portuguese & you want your say, if you are Aussie, then yes, your country.
Same as all these fighting against immigration based on some of the new immigrants wants to change Australia way of life.

The minority group Aboriginals, yes they deserve a say, because they are indigenous to this country.

You just like to argue.

"other countries" are proud of their ancient sites becuase they belong to the people of the area and express a shared hsitopry. heritage thus pride in teh site for what it is as the earliers refelction of a civilization that has gone on to evolve over the geernations.

According to your cultural coordinator mate aboriginal artifacts don't have ANYTHING to do with current Australia, how can we be proud of another culture's achievements?

Did you read what I wrote about Sardinia? Those people disappeared from the island 3 thousand years ago and no one knows how or why. Completely unrelated to current Sardinians and yet they're still immensely proud this is on their land.

The are plenty of ancient sites around the world built by peoples that no longer exist.

It's fine. You don't appreciate it, probably never will. You're not alone.

Sure but the current people of Sardinia are fiercely loyal to their region and feel (so Ive been told by a mate) less Italian or French or even Arabic settlers and more Sardinians.... The history of their island is therefore a shared source of their own history as there isn't a contemporary group laying claim to this cultural heritage trying to exclude them from it. Think of the current Egyptians for example, sure they understand their nomadic Arabic roots tie them geographically to the Pyramids but not so much ethnically, however all of their cultural artefacts are a shared source of pride for the Egyptian people are they not?

Aboriginal cave paintings are, and have always been, something we were told doesn't belong to us "New Australians". Its not a case of whether I appreciate it or not, its that it is indicative of the resentment of a group of people who make it clear it is NOT a shared heritage and we are the children of invaders.

What did someone say about you twisting words, here we go again.
Twist away all you want, you cant twist your way out of this one... its NOT my country, and therefore NOT my artwork but you want me to appreciate it? Nope sorry, doesnt work that way....

I do agree it makes it hard to think of 'our' cultural sites when the rhetoric is "invaders, blow-ins and tenants".

Lucky for me I see myself, those granted citizenship and the original indigenous inhabitants as all being Aussies together so I manage.

We did not come from the indigenous cultural stream, but we can still recognise them as part of our land's heritage and now a country if we want to. Like the UK loves its Roman Walls as part of their land's great history. I accept Muz's point on that.

Personally I do not feel like they are 'our' sites in any way - but I try. The loud minority with hatred and anger do not set my views on the good people in the majority.

As tourists or just ourselves we are not welcome at their sacred sites by their very nature though. Around Uluru we are asked to not take photos and from memory you cannot get among the sacred sites themselves.

Maybe, as part of a tour, visitors would be welcomed and accepted as ceremonial members of the tribe - but it sort of refutes the sacredness and privacy of the traditional owners beliefs if commercialisation can bypass it.

Hard to get excited by their existence when their very sacred nature prevents you from being a part of it.

Perspective can be a choice; albeit a hard and murky one at times.

Read it again, not that difficult. Try not to be so defensive.
In Sydney the Greeks, Italians, Portuguese are all so accepted now, seems like you in Melbourne still a stigma.
